What really bothers me is when they don't change the song and get bashed* for it.

When Rockstar: INXS ran Tara Slone sang "Take it Easy" by the Eagles unchanged. What did the INXS guys do? Ask her if she was a lesbian. Tara was obviously as shocked as I was that they would ask that straight out on camera and she hedged with a comment about liking to keep her sexuality ambiguous.

I'd like to think if I were in that situation I'd have the guts to pop back with "does it matter if I am?" because seriously, that is not a question you should be getting in what amounts to a job interview!

*While it may be debatable that the INXS guys were being negative, the fan reactions around the web basically called her stupid for not changing the song. As if changing it is required if you aren't the same sex as the original performer.
