But if the lyrics were done to suit the original artist's gender...it makes sense for them to suit whoever is singing it currently.

Oh, I hate that too. Just sing the song with lyrics as is. No one is going to think any differently of you. Well, okay, there will be few knuckledraggers but most people don't care.

I get a good laugh from it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I had major respect for one of my favorite artists when I saw him live, he covered a song that had been written and performed by a female artist and he kept the original gender orientations. It was nice to see him comfortable enough with himself that he would do that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this cover of call me maybe, because the guy doesn't change the line "all the other boys try to chase me": http://youtu.be/sPU8V-nvUEk

I think this cover of "want you back" is kind of interesting though because she changes object of affection to a male, but she leaves in the line "But now since I see you in his arms" so it seems like she's pining for an old boyfriend who left her because he realized he was gay and got himself a boyfriend (okay fine, I guess he could be bi but whatever): http://youtu.be/axEXQvWx1kA

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG same! It's like, no one's gonna think you're gay if you cover a song about love that uses pronouns of your same gender.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a song that is about a (romani, poor, female) prostitute who falls for her client. Male singers usually alter the song so that it's sung from the perspective of the (white, rich, male) client. It makes me irrationally angry. It changes the tone and the meaning of the song.

I get mad if they change the gender pronouns for the person being sung about, but not necessarily the POV singer. I don't know, I suppose I see the subject of the song as more important than the POV?

It never bothers me, personally. Part of the reason I like cover songs is to see a song given a new light or a change in perspective. I mean, I think it's awesome when pronouns are kept the same, too--particularly to, say, turn a previously heterosexual song into a homosexual one (there's not a ton of those out there, so more power to them I say)--but if someone wants to use a song to sing about the gender they're interested in, regardless of what it is...I don't know. It just really doesn't bother me. If I wanted to hear a song without any changes made, period, then I'd listen to the original.

I actually love it when songs do this. It shows how feelings can be the same for men and women, a song doesn't have to only/specifically be written from one gender's POV -- a person of the opposite gender can relate to the song just as well, and changing the pronouns makes that even better.

Sometimes they do do it in an awkward, weird-sounding way though :\

I thought this was only me...Idk I just think it always sounds better as the original version. Changing the pronouns makes them stand out when I listen.

It bothers me, too, just because it stands out if I've heard the original.

I don't focus on the story presented in the lyrics of a song for the most part, though.
Actually, a lot of times, I completely disregard the lyrics altogether.
But something off like that can bother me when I notice it.

Me too, anon

I like the Rocking Romance covers because they keep the gender in. But, I really like Tyler Ward's Want You Back...even if he does change the cover to reflect his gender - I found it amusing he messes up though halfway though and even says that, hahaha.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it bugs me, sometimes it doesn't. I'd prefer most artists to be more comfortable sounding like they're suddenly singing a gay love song or something, but sometimes it does work out ok with the change. *shrugs*

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2012-10-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care if the gender is changed, but that "an really" in your secret is bugging me.

It's a peeve of mine when artists change the gender of the love interest in a love song, admittedly because I want to hear some of them sung by an artist of the same sex without cowardice, but also because I consider covers to be tributes to the originals, and changing something as petty as the gender of the subject to fit you better just rubs me the wrong way. I think I have odd ideas about what constitutes disrespectful.

I agree if we are talking about the singer's significant other. It weirds me out when artists don't change any references to the singer's gender, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. I can't stand to hear someone cover a song that was originally (or is best known as being) done by someone of the opposite gender.

This really bothers me too.

It's one of the reasons why I love THIS COVER of Call Me Maybe so much.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
sort of OT but a huge part of why I love Black Kids' I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_gTiN2P-M) is because of the dude singing the song from a girl's POV (about another girl).

This bothers me too. It's not necessarily enough to make me hate a cover, but it throws me off.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's really up to the artist and why they want to cover the song.

Sometimes it's to make a statement sometimes it's probably because they like the song and want to make it theirs or direct it to someone in their life.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I really despise when they don't because it makes no sense.
