Judging from the comments here when news of Elementary first surfaced, you're not alone. Personally, I feel the same way. There aren't enough shows where the male is the more emotional one. (I can only think if Mike Logan from Law and Order and Booth from Bones.)

Another tally-mark from me in the "wish it had been so" column.

Um...the show's barely started, so they could go in a different direction on this, but my impression of Elementary definitely isn't that Sherlock is less emotional than Joan. He's the one who threw what she aptly referred to as a "temper tantrum" in the first episode, after all.

As to OP's complaint, I agree that the reversal of their roles would be awesome, but I'm still very pleased with both Liu's portrayal of Joan (my favorite Watson in any adaptation!) and the relationship between Joan and Sherlock.

+1

He crashed. Her car. Into the suspect's. Because he was mad and/or manic.

If that does not qualify as emotional, not sure what does.

*blink* Sherlock is bipolar in this adaptation?

There are reasons to think original Holmes was.

I think Jeremy Brett interpreted the character more or less that way, too (probably because he suffered from manic depression himself).

Warehouse 13 immediately comes to mind. Although Myka has her moments, I'd call Pete the more emotional one. There's Castle - Castle is definitely more emotional than Beckett.
