Judging from the comments here when news of Elementary first surfaced, you're not alone. Personally, I feel the same way. There aren't enough shows where the male is the more emotional one. (I can only think if Mike Logan from Law and Order and Booth from Bones.)

This is not an uncommon opinion. Makes me side-eye some people a little because it's an excuse some Sherlock fans have been using to bash, though.

Give it a chance anyway, she puts up with none of his bullshit and it's awesome.

[personal profile] atgdng 2012-10-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of think she would have made a better Holmes, but I like it the way it is, too. (Besides, there's always role-swap fic, right?)

Because inscrutable, hyper-intelligent, dark-haired, cold and omniscient Asian genius isn't a stereotype at all.

Maybe we should give points that the producers aren't afraid to cast an Asian woman as the softer, more credulous (yet still awesomely strong and no-bullshit) viewer stand-in character? Maybe? No?

Whatever.

I agree as well.

I think the Elementary fandom has decided that it would be racist to cast her as Sherlock due the stereotype of the Asian genius.

Interestingly, I have yet to see this opinion expressed by someone who isn't a BBC-Sherlock fan. Coincidence? I think not.

Lucy Liu is perfect as Watson. Haters gonna hate.

It makes sense though. They said they made Watson a woman to challenge Sherlock's problem with women that he's always had in the books.

Plus, it also challenges the whole "white male genius is infallible and can never be responsible for the consequences of his actions" thing since he seems more willing to apologize for his jackassery.

She would make a good Sherlock, but she's also a really fantastic Watson, so I'm not gonna complain.

I don't know, I like the idea of a female Sherlock, but I also like the idea of a kick-ass female Watson.

That said, I'm still leery about them stripping away the military background from the Watson character. Very leery. Because, well, why? It's not as if the US hasn't been fighting wars for the last decade, and it's not as if there aren't a ton of female medics. One of them even won the Silver Star for bravery in combat, so it's not like she couldn't have had the same experiences as dude!Watson.

It just seemed like such a pointless change. They could have made her lose her medical licence, and focused on that, while discussing her military background very little, but still kept it in. Just... why take it out? It makes no sense to me. None. It's so random. I mean three things about the character: make it American, make it Asian, make it female. American certainly doesn't stop one from being a war veteran. Neither does being Asian. Neither does being female, but.... :/ Female veterans already face erasure when they return home. Why do this? It's so random, and uncool.

People who've watched it - is there a good reason, a plot/character reason Joan Watson couldn't be a veteran?

I totally agree.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-10-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Although I really do think she's making a really cool Watson! If you haven't checked out the show yet you should. I still wish it would have been two lady leads because female Watson and Sherlock would be perfect, but I'm enjoying what it is for now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have given that show a go, yeah.

Personally I wish they'd genderswapped EVERYONE. Sherlock, John, Lestrade, Mycroft, Mrs. Hudson, Moriarty, Irene ... everyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree inasmuch as I'd looooove to see a female Holmes--preferably with a Watson who was also female, though. Also, Lucy Liu kind of can't act. :|

Lucy Liu, you are so foxy but you always look very bored in almost every promotional photo I see of you for this show. Can't they let you have facial expressions in them?

actually, I guess miller does too. is it because it's supposed to be a super serious show or something?

PREACH. I like them both, but really, this is not progessive at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Couldn't agree more. I can understand the excitement over an interesting female character, but the fact that they made the more emotional one a girl but still felt the need to leave the smarter one male (and British) sort of bothered me.

Dammit, I'm a Sherlock fan. I've been avoided this show to avoid any wank associated with it.
