Because inscrutable, hyper-intelligent, dark-haired, cold and omniscient Asian genius isn't a stereotype at all.

Maybe we should give points that the producers aren't afraid to cast an Asian woman as the softer, more credulous (yet still awesomely strong and no-bullshit) viewer stand-in character? Maybe? No?

Whatever.

+1,000

This is a typically a complaint from people who haven't actually watched the show.

How people can't see that it's more progressive and far less stereotypical that she was cast as Watson eludes me. Except that they're the ones who are succumbing to their own internal stereotypes about brilliant, cruel Asians.

I think you're completely off-base, here. Most people aren't focusing on the fact that Lucy Liu is Asian; they're focusing on the fact that she's female. They're wanting Holmes to be female, regardless of race.

Uh, no? I complain because, as per usual, the woman is: the secondary character to another genius white guy, essentially Sherlock's nanny, as well as being the "emotional" one.

And this is why they both should have been women.

That would have been even better.

Yes.

I read this secret as a desire for Sherlock to be female rather than as a desire for Sherlock to be Asian. Lucy Liu's race is incidental.

OP

Yeah, my desire for her to be Sherlock has everything do with the fact that she's female and nothing to do with the fact that she's Asian.

Maybe I'd like the female to be the main character instead of the sidekick? No?

I don't really feel like Joan has been painted as a sidekick though. She's definitely the POV character and doesn't take Sherlock's shit and was key in solving that first case.

Well, sounds like a good reason for me to give it a shot.

I'd wait until a few more episodes come out. The first episode was shit, OP, and I wouldn't waste your time unless there was something better over the horizon. Avoid the disappointment.

I actually enjoyed the first episode. It had some flaws, but for a pilot episode the pacing was actually pretty good, and it gave you a good feel for the characters. Just thought I'd give a differing view from the comment above, since I know reaction to the pilot was mixed.

I liked it too

Of course it's about race. Of course! What else could it possibly be about.

Besides, if we're shamelessly race-baiting here - how is it less stereotypical to make the Asian the doctor?

Ooh, ooh, or the sidekick! It's incredibly progressive for the Asian to the sidekick!
