Wow.

First off, just... wow, you lie to your friends about what you like? That won't end well. Think how shallow your kinship over something like that is. I'm not talking about how much you care about each other, but that the meaning behind the fun you have is too different on each end. If I was a friend of yours, I would be hurt that you hadn't been honest and were just humoring me to keep me happy. Friends don't have to share everything to be friends.

But in regards to the art, and thinking no one likes it for the story? Personally it was too long for me to keep up with, but I enjoyed what I saw of it. I didn't want to get into it either, because of the art. I thought Usopp (the guy with the nose) was dumb looking and was prepared to hate him... and he turned out to be my absolute favorite. The depth they gave his character was the reason why.

You just come off as so shallow in so many ways due to this secret, I don't even know what else to tell you.

Not OP, but I learned to lie about what I like (and even what I hate) because in my experience, being honest about it never ended well.

You need better friends. :( I ended up hurting a lot of feelings by pretending in the past, because when it came down to not being able to pretend anymore, they were very upset with me. Then how do your friends know when you are genuinely interested in something you both like? Are you humoring them?

If they can't respect different tastes, they probably think little of you for other things anyway. Getting along despite differences is part of being an adult.

I hate homestuck, MLP, Hetalia etc but most of my friends like it. I politely state I dislike it, and we are still friends because we care about each other beyond fandom. I'll send them something related to their fandoms if I come across it and think they'd like it. Sometimes they do the same for me, but it's not /expected/.

They don't. After the experiences I've had in fandom, I prefer pretending and being shallow about it. The alternative was a fucking nightmare.

I guess are experiences are just really different then. D: I'm sorry to hear that it sucked for you. Sorry if I sounded defensive. It's... hard for me to understand why people would want to keep up pretenses like that.

It's not exactly the principle behind Mark Twain's "Corn Pone Opinions" (http://www.paulgraham.com/cornpone.html) essay -- because fandom is rarely, if ever, that important in life -- but it's similar. Sometimes it's far less trouble to lie and fit in than to be honest and stick out.
