Honestly, I LOVE One Piece's art. And this is coming from someone who, yeah, is pretty shallow sometimes in regards to manga art. I used to hate it. But after reading it for so long I think it's fun and fluid and vibrant, and I love looking at it.
Also, the plot is just...fantastic. Which is the important part. I guess what I'm trying to say is give it a try! Of course, duh, easy for me to say, but it IS worth it. And the art does grow on you.

Original poster, I think we get that you don't like the art. That's fine. I think Picasso's stuff is ugly as hell, so there's no accounting for taste. Why the hell are you telling us? There aren't many OP fans reading it for the art, you know.

I hated it too till I read it. Then it got more bearable because I got sucked into the story. Plus, Oda's double-spread colored pages are always fantastic and creative, it inspires me to practice drawing more.

Also, that part about the fans better be a joke because it's ridiculous. :\

Hell, I'm in NHS therapy for my inability to accept my self worth and even I think 'just say, "Not my cup of tea,"'. There's nothing wrong with not loving/caring about/enjoying a fandom, and there are many reasons why people do and do not, including art, story, dialogue, editing, consistency, thematic relevance to everyday life etc. People won't have a problem with just not being interested in something, and most of them i.e. nearly all bar the ones who were friends BECAUSE of the lie will accept the truth and (eventually) be happy for it.

imo op just hates one piece's artstyle and made up the rest of the secret to have a "justification". also it's one of the biggest iconic anime/manga not only in japan, but worldwide, and you think everyone is lying about it...??

I'm the first to admit the art's not for everyone. Hell, I can't reread the first 100 chapters or so because the art was so ridiculous then. Oda's improved over 15 years and there's a lot I'll forgive because the story is so goddamn good. If that's not your way of doing things, so be it.

Or some of us actually like the art. One Piece easily, consistently has had some of the most vibrant colour spreads in WSJ.

I know a lot of people are gonna be like "omg where's your spine, just say you don't like it!" And I'll bet most of those same people, if you said you didn't like it, would then start an obnoxious crusade to "convert" you into a fan. Because omg, how dare anyone not like it.

TBH, the story and art style are mediocre to me; the fandom is the chief reason I can't fucking stand this series.

Longnose guy (Usopp) has turned into a complete badass. He was also the first to get a legitimate love interest, is fully literate (which several crew members may not be), the son of a pirate, a sniper, and a fantastic artist. The nose is harking back to Pinocchio because Usopp is known for his over-the-top lies.

If Usopp's (aka longnose guy) character design is the one that weirds you out, then it might be a good thing you don't read/watch One Piece.

Because seriously, he's one of the more normal looking ones.

The art style has always bothered me, far too much. It's just an assault on the eyes to me and I don't...really care about the series anyway, so I pretty much stay where I can't see it.

I hated the art too, but when I started watching it it really grew on me. Some of his character designs are hilarious IMO. Now it's one of my favorites and I keep up every week

First off, just... wow, you lie to your friends about what you like? That won't end well. Think how shallow your kinship over something like that is. I'm not talking about how much you care about each other, but that the meaning behind the fun you have is too different on each end. If I was a friend of yours, I would be hurt that you hadn't been honest and were just humoring me to keep me happy. Friends don't have to share everything to be friends.

But in regards to the art, and thinking no one likes it for the story? Personally it was too long for me to keep up with, but I enjoyed what I saw of it. I didn't want to get into it either, because of the art. I thought Usopp (the guy with the nose) was dumb looking and was prepared to hate him... and he turned out to be my absolute favorite. The depth they gave his character was the reason why.

You just come off as so shallow in so many ways due to this secret, I don't even know what else to tell you.
