That's why they're superheros.

I don't know, I think people can surprise themselves when they're in the moment.

But, as anon said, that's why they're superheroes.

Well you could argue you're restrained by reality. Usually when we're watching fictional stuff where someone does something heroic common narrative dictates that they almost always get out alive even if they screw up a little. I know the character doesn't know this...but you do so maybe you're thinking "in the real world I couldn't do that because it's dangerous"

On the other hand some people have done some extraordinary things when the adrenaline gets going. So who knows, in the right circumstances you might be capable. I wouldn't compare yourself to a fictional character over it.

I'm with you, Nonnie, and I hope my courage is never tested.

May I live in uninteresting time, yes.

Well, that's why they're called superheroes right? If everyone thought they could do it nbd, they wouldn't be such wish-fulfillment, they'd just be baseline. But you might be surprised. People can do some amazing things that they never thought they'd be able to do and they always thought they weren't brave enough for when the chips are down.

Incidentally, probably my favorite thing about that scene how utterly terrified he looked. He was pretty much on the verge of having a breakdown and panicking and shitting himself the entire time he was carrying the nuke up, and you could tell he really didn't want to do this and he really really REALLY didn't want to die and he had so much other stuff he wanted to do and he had plans and he had goals and he didn't even get to call his girlfriend before he died, but he still did it because a lot more people would die otherwise and getting the nuke out meant he would die but it also meant everyone was safe and that was more important so it was okay. That's what was really impressive. If you're not scared about it, it isn't that brave, but if you're scared out of your mind and you do it anyway, yeah, that's awesome.

I loved that too, how he was so scared and vulnerable.

well it's easy to be brave when you have an invincible suit of armor that works on movie magic and a contract that says you'll be in sequels

1. You never know what you are or aren't capable of until you actually find out.

2. If it bothers you that much, go pick up litter or volunteer somewhere, and let the actual good you do balance out the hypothetical good that you feel you'd be too cowardly to do in a dangerous situation.

Cap's jumping about the Helicarrier just made me go "nope, nope, never gonna do that", same as in the new Star Trek where Kirk and Sulu were fighting on the drill platform. It just boggles my mind that anyone is insane enough to do that when one slip means certain death.

He's uniquely brave, not everyone has that capacity for selflessness. Did you forget the Captain America scene where he jumped on the grenade? Most people wouldn't do that; don't feel bad!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
That is clearly a picture of Iron Man.

She was talking about a different movie (the Captain America movie, to be specific). At least, I think it's a she. It's probably too insulting to say, "it."

I realize that, genius. I was just bringing up another example.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
clearly, you have a problem with the flow of conversation and how the adults are talking about heroic action.

go back to the children's table, honey.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
All I can say is...you'd be surprised, OP. You'd really be surprised by the human spirit sometimes. It can do utterly mind-bogglingly crazy awesome things when pushed. Some of it is bizarre or nasty, but some of it is really cool.

Also, okay...I caught the Crucified Hero Shot right away when he was falling backward towards earth (the repulsor ports in his palms might've helped with that) but I can't believe it took me this long to make the "carrying a big heavy thing on his back" connection. *smacks self on forehead* I play drinking games with movie symbolism! Bad geek!

Like others have said, you never know until you're in the moment, OP. Some people who think they're very brave freeze up when faced with danger; others like yourself find that when it all comes down to it, they don't feel anything at all.
