Re: Least flawed canon you're in the fandom for?
(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)Reaaaaaalllllllly hope you're referring specifically to the most recent movie here, and not including all of Trek fandom in its entirety.
Because a little thing called... uh, well, Spock's Brain, The Final Frontier, Generations, Code of Honor, Move Along Home, and Threshold might disagree with you. Just for starters. I love Star Trek to death, but there is a LOT of Bad Trek.
You don't wanna Allamarain?
Re: You don't wanna Allamarain?
(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, really, you could put just about any episode of season 1 TNG on there, Code of Honor is just the most... egregious. By which I mean racist. And there's plenty of bad episodes in every series, really.
Man, Angel One was terrible. What a turd.
Re: You don't wanna Allamarain?
We've watched DS9 and Voyager the whole way through with my nine year old but the thought of watching all ten seasons of TNG in chronological order kinda gives me hives. LOL
Re: You don't wanna Allamarain?
(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)I think TNG holds up pretty well after the second season. But maybe that's my nostalgia blinders on. It's definitely a different style, and there's still bad episodes, but I think it's a pretty solid show after the beginning. The beginning is just... so, so bad. (Also weren't there 7 seasons of TNG? Am I crazy?)
Re: You don't wanna Allamarain?
I think my main issue with TNG is that there's no overarching story that encompasses the whole series, really. I don't think having Q in the first and last episodes counts. *g* I also don't think there's a whole lot of character development. Data and Picard get a lot of character development, and everybody else is pretty much exactly the same character he or she started as with minor changes. IDK
I passionately love many TNG episodes, I just don't think it holds up as well as some of the other franchises.
Icon is shareable! the maker is in the keywords. :)
Re: You don't wanna Allamarain?
(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 05:26 am (UTC)(link)Even Picard doesn't have THAT much character growth - he has character moments, and moments where he learns things, and character growth within an episode, but I'd be hard pressed to find a significant way in which he acts differently at the start of the series than he does at the end because of something he experienced. I think Data is the only one with legit character growth, and maybe to a minor extent Laforge by proxy.
But that doesn't bother me - to be honest, I like that a lot. I like that it provides a stable structure for telling different stories from week to week, that you have this basic reliable framework - the same characters, the same tone, the same basic situation compelling adventures - and that you can use that to create an anthology series, where they do all these different things and have these adventures.
It's definitely different than DS9 or Voyager or ENT where you have a serial storyline. But I honestly prefer the non-serial style, and it's something that's really fallen out of style. Maybe it doesn't hold up because it's more old-fashioned, but I like that about the show. You wouldn't re-watch it in the same way you'd rewatch DS9, certainly. But I don't think that means it's a lesser series because it's telling different stories week by week, as long as those stories are interesting, and they usually are to me, after the first season at least. And some of the second season. And some of the 7th season.
TNG love y'all

I think what I appreciate most about TOS is that while the special effects don't hold up, the dialogue does and the relationships between the characters seem just as vital and interesting as they did years ago.
