Least flawed canon you're in the fandom for?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-10-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, the canons for most of my favorite fandoms are pretty flawed. Star Wars? Prequels. Harry Potter? Deathly Hallows. Marvel comics? Went to shit. DC comics? Reboot. The West Wing? Seasons 5-7. The Simpsons? Went to shit. HIMYM? Storytelling fail. Scrubs? So much crap. Doctor Who? Even more crap. Buffy? HUGE amounts of crap. The Avengers? Lots of meh in the lead-up and lots of meh almost guaranteed in the follow-up. And so on and so on for my other fandoms. Pretty much the only non-faily fandom I have is Star Trek.

So, I have a request: name me some fandoms (especially ones where no new canon stuff is coming out) that didn't really disappoint you, have horrible wall-bangers or derailment that wrecked characters for you, or turn super-shitty at the end. I'd like some reassurance and suggestions please!

Princess Tutu. It has some flaws, but nothing that really damages my interest in any part of the show. Every episode does something to advance the plot, the characters are well-written and well acted, the animation is gorgeous, etc. Most of the complaints I have about it is nitpicking--the harshest thing I can say is that the early parts of each season feel pretty episodic the first time you watch them, but as I said they still all add something to the plot in some way and I don't think any of them could be cut out without losing something.

That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Man that's tough. Um, I thought Better Off Ted was pretty consistent in tone/humor through it's two season run, and I don't remember anything too egregious in terms of character development. The Middleman also didn't last long enough to go through derailment?

Probably A:tLA and even that's done my poor Azula wrong. None of my fandoms are perfect. God I could go on and on about how I constantly want to throw Merlin and Doctor Who off of a bridge.

"Pretty much the only non-faily fandom I have is Star Trek"

Reaaaaaalllllllly hope you're referring specifically to the most recent movie here, and not including all of Trek fandom in its entirety.

Because a little thing called... uh, well, Spock's Brain, The Final Frontier, Generations, Code of Honor, Move Along Home, and Threshold might disagree with you. Just for starters. I love Star Trek to death, but there is a LOT of Bad Trek.

Now that I think about it, I can't think of any outside of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which started Meh but developed into something wonderful. Dukat was one of the best villains to ever grace television.

But everything else...SPN? Season 6 and 7 were a huge mess at times. Fringe? Stopped watching when it became the Peter and Olivia's epic love story show. LOST was awesome until half way into season five, when the writers realized they had no idea how to finish it.

Hold on. The vampire thriller, Nathaniel Cade books are actually one series that keeps on getting better with each new book. (There's three out so far.) It's by Christopher Farnsworth and worth a look.

I'm aware that Yu Yu Hakusho has flaws. But, honestly, I remain gloriously and blissfully content about just how perfect the show is that whatever flaws it has don't matter to me.

(Which is pretty strange because I'm the sort of fan that enjoys things by ripping them apart down to their flaws and then playing with those. XD; )

The Avengers? Lots of meh in the lead-up and lots of meh almost guaranteed in the follow-up.

LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU! EVERY MOVIE POST AVENGERS WILL BE JUST AS GOOD!

I don't think I have ever been disappointed or let down by Discworld, the newer books are (in my opinion) better than the old ones (not that the old ones are near bad, the series is just improving) and I haven't seen any wank whenever I peep into fandom.

MST3K, aside from those who insist on arguing over who the better host was, is also pretty chill. It might not have been that way when it was airing, though.

The Mistmantle Chronicles (You might be saying "What?" - yeah, it's a fandom of two). What I especially loved the fact that there wasn't a designated 'bad' species of animal like Redwall (While I love it dearly,it falls in the canon pitfall trap of mundane from book 13 to the end. I wish there would be more...). Despite not being religious, there was a strong religious undertone that I really enjoyed.

Firefly is pretty much perfect for me. It doesn't answer all the questions it asks, but I'm okay with ambiguity.

I think everything has at least some flaws, and of course, not everyone is going to like a thing equally.

That said... maybe Lord of the Rings? Obviously, not everyone likes it and lost of people have specific problems with points in the books and/or movies, but on the whole, I think both versions (I won't go into the animated movies because do those even have a fandom?) are very good pieces of storytelling that hang together very well and I don't remember encountering anyone in fandom who seemed to be there just to snark on it.

Thief. The actual fandom is awful. And the third game, while unfairly maligned and a decent game in its own right, has technical and gameplay issues (partially a result of being a forerunner in the practice of multi-platform development and developed under the assumptions that console players were morons,) though said issues are mostly mitigated with a mod. That being said, it's a solid trilogy with fantastic atmosphere across all three games, plus hundreds of fan-made missions (mostly for 1 and 2) keep the spirit alive well after the last game came out.

Back stories that make sense!

Goofy humor!

Off the top of my head, the only things I can think of are Good Omens and Cardcaptor Sakura. And the latter probably won't appeal to you if you don't like the pretty sparkly shojo manga aesthetic.

I'm not sure. I almost went with Dead Like Me, but then I remembered there was a terrible movie follow up and the Daisy/Mason/Ray plot...I wouldn't go as far as saying it ruined Daisy and Mason as characters, but it was pretty painful to watch them and the 'gravelings are people who died unpredictably' was maybe not the best concept to introduce.

Maybe Puella Magi Madoka Magica? I came out of that series loving nearly every character and appreciating the roles of the ones I didn't. I haven't read any of the spin-off material, though, aside from the PSP game which was unexpectedly enjoyable. I suppose there could be some fail there. Certainly the summaries I've read of the manga spin-offs sound...less than promising.

As an aside, does anyone else find they're more likely to be engaged by canons with lots of flaws? I definitely think more about heavily flawed shows/games/comics--and seek out meta and fic for them--than I do for 'quality' canons.

One Piece has been, on average, good for a very long time. And it's relatively unproblematic for manga. Might want to skip Fishman Island arc and Skypia--they're a bit dull.

The only not-flawed canons I can think of are video games. In case you're a gamer (or anyone reading is), I'd suggest....

-The Elder Scrolls series (Starting with Morrowind, which I think is absolutely critical for understanding the cultural context of the secondary conflict in Skyrim. I also think Oblivion is important, especially exploring the southern areas around Leyawiin and Bravil, for the more nuanced view it gives of the Empire. These games have some of the best lore since Tolkien, imo.)
-The Legacy of Kain series (One of the absolute best time travel and vampire stories ever written. Fantastic voice-acting. Hugely complex, but even without a final installment to tie it all together there are ZERO plot holes. This is spread across two console generations, tho, and I think every game is important to understanding the whole story.)
-Final Fantasy 10, 12, and 13 (FF6 and FF7 are the best of the series imo but neither have aged well.)
-Legend of Mana (This is an old-school ps1 game. It DOES have plot holes and inconsistencies, but they're intentional and all feed into the overarching plot that this world is something you're creating in your head. Gorgeous art, great storylines, but I'd only recommend it if you play a lot of older games.)
-Kingdom Hearts 1 (The first game is wonderfully written. KH2 is also a lot of fun, but they introduce a lot of other concepts that are poorly justified. Later installments add to the mess.)
-The Dragon Age series (Origins and Awakenings are great. DAII has absolutely amazing characters but the plot is often poorly done and the gameplay is some of the worst I've seen since the PS1/N64 generation.)

I'm sure there are others I can think of, if anyone's interested. Sadly for most of these the fandoms are a bit lacking.

Cowboy Bebop. Not perfect, but a beautifully contained story with a beginning, middle, and end, that struck a solid balance between unanswered mysteries and providing closure. The setting, the characters, the music (dear god the music), it was just really good. The movie was more like a missing episode than a sequel, which was great.

Inception. Again, very well-contained, and one of very few movies I can watch over and over again. I pray to god it never gets a sequel.

I almost forgot, Leverage! Four seasons and it hasn't done anything that makes me want to strangle it, which has never happened before with a live-action show. I haven't watched season 5 yet, but after this long, I have faith.

There's a ton of runners-up, media that was perfect in some ways and straight fucked up in others. I'm probably forgetting something else that never pissed me off, but lord knows there weren't many.

Journeyman (about at mysteriously time-traveling crime reporter). And I'm not just saying that because I've been pimping my recap/reviews - it is legitimately my favorite show. There are a few instances where it looks like it could head in the cheating husband/jealous wife direction, but I think the show makes it fairly clear pretty early on that it's not really going to go there.

The first handful of episodes are probably the weakest, but I still adore all but one of them -- and come episode five, things really start getting (and staying) awesome, because everything about Dan's travels to the past start relating to the present, instead of just being standalone to stories to set up the show's premise.

We seem to have a lot of fandoms in common, and this is only 13 episodes (all on basic, no-subscription needed) Hulu.
