Re: Least flawed canon you're in the fandom for?
(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)-The Elder Scrolls series (Starting with Morrowind, which I think is absolutely critical for understanding the cultural context of the secondary conflict in Skyrim. I also think Oblivion is important, especially exploring the southern areas around Leyawiin and Bravil, for the more nuanced view it gives of the Empire. These games have some of the best lore since Tolkien, imo.)
-The Legacy of Kain series (One of the absolute best time travel and vampire stories ever written. Fantastic voice-acting. Hugely complex, but even without a final installment to tie it all together there are ZERO plot holes. This is spread across two console generations, tho, and I think every game is important to understanding the whole story.)
-Final Fantasy 10, 12, and 13 (FF6 and FF7 are the best of the series imo but neither have aged well.)
-Legend of Mana (This is an old-school ps1 game. It DOES have plot holes and inconsistencies, but they're intentional and all feed into the overarching plot that this world is something you're creating in your head. Gorgeous art, great storylines, but I'd only recommend it if you play a lot of older games.)
-Kingdom Hearts 1 (The first game is wonderfully written. KH2 is also a lot of fun, but they introduce a lot of other concepts that are poorly justified. Later installments add to the mess.)
-The Dragon Age series (Origins and Awakenings are great. DAII has absolutely amazing characters but the plot is often poorly done and the gameplay is some of the worst I've seen since the PS1/N64 generation.)
I'm sure there are others I can think of, if anyone's interested. Sadly for most of these the fandoms are a bit lacking.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 10:58 am (UTC)(link)Granted, I've only played the later games, but the voice acting is fucking AMAZING.
