I agree. I've heard people actually say "Fandom is female space" like anyone (regardless of gender) just gets to stake a claim on fandom and declare who can and cannot participate. You can't stop anyone from being in fandom.

As long as people are respectful I don't think it should matter. However...I've seen a lot of male dominated spaces. They tend to treat women pretty terribly. Especially gaming fandoms.

"lolz ur not a wominz. Boobs or I'll call u a manz, LOLZ" "I should be able to say rape, women just need to get back into the kitchen" "Wahh, I should be able to sexually harass you ; . ; Why are you being so unfairrr"

Then of course there's the bromies sticking their entitled asses into a space that was meant for young children/young girls.

This is why fandom isn't a male space, either. It not being a "female space" doesn't automatically make it belong to men.

I'm not for calling something a (gender specific) space. Just that there are places mostly (or most vocally) populated by certain genders. And I can see why someone might want a space away from the main one for a certain group of people. I don't think banning genders is how to go about this, though.

I completely agree with what you're saying here. Safe spaces are fine and people should have them if they need or want them. I can also see why someone might want a space "away from the main one."

The point is that those safe spaces are away from the main ones though, and the main one doesn't intentionally exclude people. People that assert that all of fandom should be a safe space, or that the central hub of a fandom should be a "safe space! women only," I can't agree with.

I totally agree. I think that safe spaces for certain groups definitely have their place and there is a need for them in some fandoms more than others, but any space that's going to exclude certain groups should be separate from main fandom spaces. There needs to be an effort to make general or main fandom spaces more welcoming to everyone, but barring people from them just for their gender isn't going to accomplish that.
