I agree. I've heard people actually say "Fandom is female space" like anyone (regardless of gender) just gets to stake a claim on fandom and declare who can and cannot participate. You can't stop anyone from being in fandom.

As long as people are respectful I don't think it should matter. However...I've seen a lot of male dominated spaces. They tend to treat women pretty terribly. Especially gaming fandoms.

Then of course there's the bromies sticking their entitled asses into a space that was meant for young children/young girls.

I'm hesitant to agree that fandom is a 'safe space' simply because it *is* on the internet, and I've seen way too much crap go down to really believe anywhere on the net is a 'safe space'.

That said, it's kind of ridiculous of anyone to try to ban someone from fandom because of their gender. Not only is that pretty petty [and hateful, I suppose], there's no real way to confirm someone's gender without either meeting them, or knowing someone whose met them.

1) I feel with these statements you've never been off LJ/DW. Because seriously? There are huge fandom spaces that are hugely male dominated. So I'm not even sure why this is a problem for you.

I'm just curious how they enforce this. I know lots of girls in gaming fandom who have male handles because it keeps the creeps from bothering them. Do the mods of these places do background checks and ban you for having a name like George24 when you're actually Georgina? Do they have to out themselves to the mods? How does anyone prove they are female anyway? It would be awfully hypocritical if they demand pics.

Well aren't you a special snowflake. You wanted to have the self-righteousness of a SJW but were too much of a coward to find something actually minority or even quasi-oppressed to side with, so you picked a fictional injustice against a majority to fight over. Nicely done. No one actually tries to ban an entire gender from a main hub because it'd be absolutely pointless to enforce, so no one will actually side against you on this, and you can still get your "I'm standing up for something" props.

Also, lol what, since when were there 'main fandom hubs'? Fandom is everywhere and extremely spread out.

If I heard anyone tell me that males weren't allowed in fandom, I'd laugh in her face, and I'm female. That kind of crap is what takes the fun out of what is, essentially, nothing more than a pastime.

People say that?! I admit that I personally find fandoms that are mostly or all women to be generally more enjoyable, but I don't really seek that out, it just sort of seems to happen. And I certainly would never say they're not allowed. Goddamn, when are people going to understand what feminism actually means?

I've hung out in plenty of female-dominated fandom spaces and have literally never seen anyone say that, except one anon on F!S about a year ago who I am 99/% sure was being sarcastic.

I have never seen anyone say this even once in my entire fandom life. And if it does happen, I'm 100% positive that the woman in question would get absolutely dogpiled for it because oh no what about teh menz

meanwhile, real women are constantly harrassed in male-dominated fandoms in a public manner that is easy for everyone to see, and no one gives a damn. but nah, who cares about them we should focus on these poor fictional men who have this terrible fictional problem

Well, okay. OP could really be spinning this, because smaller fandom spaces often are virtually completely women, and when a guy pops in not expecting a weird reaction he's kind of being pretty short-sighted. Woman-only spaces are extreeeeeeeeemely rare in the real world, so I can totally imagine that many women in fandom are pretty okay with keeping their tiny fandom spaces the way they are?

Also I. pretty much just can't imagine this happening, to be honest! You say this is a 'main hub'? These days the main sections of fandom are definitely *not* virtually women by nature so a women-ganging-up-on-men in the 'main hub' kind of thing is just sort of a laughable idea.
