(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 05:45 am (UTC)(link)meanwhile, real women are constantly harrassed in male-dominated fandoms in a public manner that is easy for everyone to see, and no one gives a damn. but nah, who cares about them we should focus on these poor fictional men who have this terrible fictional problem

Same. And I've been here, and in male-dominated fandom spaces, longer than many fans have been alive. The only time I've ever seen anything happen even remotely close to it - a group of men joining a community was changing the tenor of the discussion there, and one woman poster complained about it - she did get summarily dogpiled and flamed into oblivion by both the men and the What About the Menz?!! White Knight Battalion Women's Auxiliary.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)Keep in mind: people with bullshit opinions tend to be a) louder and more persistent than people with more moderate opinions (which can be difficult to notice in an anon comm) or b) trolls.
So forgive me if I don't think a few douche-bags-likely-trolls foaming at the mouth on rare occasions is comparable to the shit women can go through in male-dominated areas if anyone catches drift of the fact that they're OMG A Woman.
THIS
(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)And all that happened just because she announced the series. Not a single episode had been made yet.
What about Brony fandom and Yamino, who is STILL target of hate and death threats, even though Hasbro officials have announced she had nothing to do with the change of "Derpy".
What about that rapist in Brony fandom, who got backed up by hundreds of Co-Bronies just because he was male and "all women lie about rape".
And people actually talk about evil women trying to keep men out of fandom?
These women are a.) a minority and b.) have no power at all to achieve their "goal".
Re: THIS
(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)I hate this argument. Equality for all means all. Doesn't matter WHICH group is doing it. Minority, majority or a single person. Everyone should be Called Out. You don't automatically get a pAss for bad behavior just because you are minority. That does nothing but confound the problem.
Re: THIS
(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)Treating both cases equally is impossible because their motivations are completely different.
It's like calling a black person out on shouting "black power" just because white people get called out when shouting "white power".
This kind of "equality" belongs into MRA territory.
But of course I agree on everything that was said in this thread about women randomly declaring an ENTIRE FANDOM to be their "safe space". That's plain unfair and also kind of childish.
Re: THIS
(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)Telling a woman she should be raped, or a man that he can't take part in a fanfiction forum, are both transgressions against people enjoying themselves. Sure, the magnitude of "you should be raped" is a hell of a lot greater than "you can't be here. Go away. This is OUR sandbox". Not denying that. However, both things hurt someone. One by threatening safety, the worse of the two, and one by saying someone doesn't have the right to have fun even if they're not actually misbehaving (well, actually BOTH circumstances are doing that). What the people who defend this behavior from women are basically saying is "Well, men treat you like crap. Therefore it's ok for you to treat COMPLETELY DIFFERENT men like crap back"
Fandom is not real world, but if the magnitudes were the same I would see it as basically saying to women that because men pay them worse and harass them at work, it would be ok for them to hold up a convenience store owned by a man they've never met.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 12:27 am (UTC)(link)Because, guess what, unless the guy actually is gay, he can easily brush it off and move on with his life. For women, we live with the fear we will be abused, raped or looked down upon EVERY DAY OF OUR LIVES.
