Don't a lot of east asians lack the genes necessary to effectively metabolise alcohol, much like they have similar issues with dairy?

Actually in retrospect this might be a racist myth I picked up from books on the 1890s or something.

Though my totally valid sample size of one Japanese friend defiantly backs that they've got no game. Guy is complete featherweight.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction you might be thinking of this. AFAIK it doesn't impact how much someone can drink tho

"It is commonly thought that the flush reaction is caused by an inability to metabolize alcohol. To the contrary, around 80% of Asian people (less common in Thailand and India) have a variant of the gene coding for the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase called ADH1B, and almost all Chinese and Korean people have a variant of the gene called ADH1C[3]. These genes result in an alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme which converts alcohol to acetaldehyde with a much higher efficiency than other gene variants (40 to 100-fold in case of ADH1B)[2]. In about 50% of Asians, the increased acetaldehyde accumulation is worsened by another gene variant, the mitochondrial ALDH2 allele, which results in an inhibited acetaldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme, responsibile for the breakdown of acetaldehyde.[3] The result is that affected people may be better at metabolizing alcohol, often not feeling the alcohol "buzz" to the same extent as others, but show far more acetaldehyde-based side effects while drinking."

The flushing has made a lot of my east Asian friends dislike drinking, and therefore they come off as lightweights. So maybe that actually has an impact on how people perceive their ability to drink lots?

I don't think it's a racist myth - both my brother and sister can't metabolise grain alcohol. They turn as red as a beet and it is fucking hilarious. XD I think it's pretty common, though my sample size is a bit skewed toward...well, my family.

It does seem to be just hops and wheat based alcohol, though. They're fine with vodka and sake...

Really? Do they feel like their heads get hot and swollen too? 'Cause that's what happens to me if I have a gulp of something alcoholic, even the fruity mixed drinks.

Have you ever met many Koreans? Their drinking culture puts the Irish to shame

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I can attest to this. When I say I don't drink at all, I get asked if I'm really Korean and how I plan to ever advance in my career if I don't go drinking with clients and coworkers. They're half joking, but only half.

It's similar in Japanese business culture, too. I actually had to have a talk with my Japanese professor when I inadvertently revealed that I don't drink in class one day.

Well, if it's racist science, it's still in our scientific canon:

The tolerance to alcohol is not equally distributed throughout the world's population, and genetics of alcohol dehydrogenase indicate resistance has arisen independently in different ethnic groups.[2] People of European descent on average have a high alcohol tolerance and are less likely to develop alcoholism compared to Aboriginal Australians, Native Americans and some East Asian groups.[3][4][5] This is related to an average higher body mass, but also to the prevalence of high levels of alcohol dehydrogenase in the population.[6][7] The high alcohol tolerance in Europeans and some other ethnic groups have probably evolved as a consequence of centuries of exposure to alcohol in established agricultural societies.[8][2]

it's acetaldehyde toxicity

Yeah, the drinks I've had in Japan tend to be incredibly weak.

Whereas two Long Island Iced Teas back in New York get me FUCKED UP
