Ahhhh, c'mon, no need to be like that. Every culture likes to get drunk, there's no need to try and get into dumb arguments about who's superior. Can't we just all unite around the fact that we, as human beings, like getting sloshed?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll drink to that!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, except for those humans who are teetotalers or can't drink for medical reasons. They don't like getting sloshed.

I assume some wank will come from this

I know. I hate when movies hype up gun use and ownership in the United States too. I live in the United States and I've never seen a real live gun or the owner of one and if I gave a gun to any the IRL friends of mine, they would have no idea how to use it.

Therefore it means gun culture doesn't exist here because my personal experiences account for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the OP is being...a little arrogant there by making that assumption.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
This. Individual experiences do not automatically equal average experiences. I grew up in a city that's 47/49 black/white. Does that mean my country is 47% black? No.

Just how many Japanese people have you drunk against?

[personal profile] atgdng 2012-10-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Worrying about who can get their drunk on better just seems to defeat the whole purpose of drinking. Can't we just be glad liquor exists?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Just FYI, super tough Japanese drinking culture is.. done mostly by underground and shadier crowds. I don't know who you've been drinking against but if it's salarymen and the average bar goer, your sample is biased.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking of the club hosts/hostesses who have to drink all night every night and keep their heads on to be able to 'work.'

Don't a lot of east asians lack the genes necessary to effectively metabolise alcohol, much like they have similar issues with dairy?

Actually in retrospect this might be a racist myth I picked up from books on the 1890s or something.

Though my totally valid sample size of one Japanese friend defiantly backs that they've got no game. Guy is complete featherweight.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction you might be thinking of this. AFAIK it doesn't impact how much someone can drink tho

"It is commonly thought that the flush reaction is caused by an inability to metabolize alcohol. To the contrary, around 80% of Asian people (less common in Thailand and India) have a variant of the gene coding for the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase called ADH1B, and almost all Chinese and Korean people have a variant of the gene called ADH1C[3]. These genes result in an alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme which converts alcohol to acetaldehyde with a much higher efficiency than other gene variants (40 to 100-fold in case of ADH1B)[2]. In about 50% of Asians, the increased acetaldehyde accumulation is worsened by another gene variant, the mitochondrial ALDH2 allele, which results in an inhibited acetaldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme, responsibile for the breakdown of acetaldehyde.[3] The result is that affected people may be better at metabolizing alcohol, often not feeling the alcohol "buzz" to the same extent as others, but show far more acetaldehyde-based side effects while drinking."

I don't think it's a racist myth - both my brother and sister can't metabolise grain alcohol. They turn as red as a beet and it is fucking hilarious. XD I think it's pretty common, though my sample size is a bit skewed toward...well, my family.

It does seem to be just hops and wheat based alcohol, though. They're fine with vodka and sake...

Well, if it's racist science, it's still in our scientific canon:

The tolerance to alcohol is not equally distributed throughout the world's population, and genetics of alcohol dehydrogenase indicate resistance has arisen independently in different ethnic groups.[2] People of European descent on average have a high alcohol tolerance and are less likely to develop alcoholism compared to Aboriginal Australians, Native Americans and some East Asian groups.[3][4][5] This is related to an average higher body mass, but also to the prevalence of high levels of alcohol dehydrogenase in the population.[6][7] The high alcohol tolerance in Europeans and some other ethnic groups have probably evolved as a consequence of centuries of exposure to alcohol in established agricultural societies.[8][2]

They have a culture of getting very drunk, because that's the only acceptable way to step outside the rigid social norms, but they usually don't take as much alcohol as say, a Russian or an Irish person.

It's about being drunk with each other, not showing off how much you can drink. Also, metabolism.

...how much do you need to drink to be considered a 'hard drinker' anyway?

Like I tend to think I'm a lightweight but most of my friends say I'm not and I have no idea what the baseline is supposed to be.

Honestly, in my experience you're right. I went to work for a Japanese company as a casual social drinker, and a 23-year-old woman at that, and by the end of the year (after thrice-weekly drinking parties) I was able to keep down more than every single one of my coworkers save the 55-year-old, whiskey-loving section chief - and even then we were roughly tied.

Some of it's genetics, the rest is just pure body mass. Not exactly sure it's something to be proud of - it's not something Irish/Russian people "accomplished", exactly.

NEW OLYMPIC EVENT! COMPETITIVE DRINKING! FIND OUT ONCE AND FOR ALL WHO HAS THE HIGHEST TOLERANCE!

I can't imagine how they would pick an alcohol for everyone to drink, for fairness' sake. A lot of countries would vie for their favorites/national drinks.

(Stay edgy, anon. We think you're cool.)

Ah sorry OP, it's pretty clear that you don't really understand the drinking culture in Japan.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
whatever man, I'm of Irish/northern English heritage and I can't hold my drink.

Also, I didn't start drinking regularly until I MOVED TO JAPAN.

Even though this secret is pretentious and snobby it is indeed true. Most Japanese people have a notoriously low tolerance, at least in my experience.

Russians are the craziest, though. idk how they all don't die of alcohol poisoning. Irish peeps may love their pints, but they don't down that 30-proof vodka like it's water.
