Honestly, in my experience you're right. I went to work for a Japanese company as a casual social drinker, and a 23-year-old woman at that, and by the end of the year (after thrice-weekly drinking parties) I was able to keep down more than every single one of my coworkers save the 55-year-old, whiskey-loving section chief - and even then we were roughly tied.

Some of it's genetics, the rest is just pure body mass. Not exactly sure it's something to be proud of - it's not something Irish/Russian people "accomplished", exactly.

Honestly I'd say it's more genetics than anything else. I'm 5'3" and about 120 lbs and I can easily drink guys under the table. I'm also largely Irish/German so I'm suspecting that plays a large role in that. My friend who is fully Irish is much the same way, too.

There's also evidence (http://www.unt.edu:8080/rss/class/mike/5700/eyecoloralcohol.pdf) that eye color can help determine who has higher alcohol tolerance. Since those of northern European descent obviously have higher rates of lighter colored eyes, it's not even body mass at play.
