but I agree that suicide is a choice that a person should be able to make for themselves, if they want it enough to go through with it.
And I think it's pretty selfish when someone else absolutely refuses to let a person because they know better and they don't want to feel bad.

No one lives a person's actual life, but themself.
I don't think anyone else is in any kind of position to make them go on living, just because it might make them feel sad.
It's pretty much going "My own personal attachments should dictate how your life runs", and that just sounds so overly controlling.

People identify and try to satisfy their own needs. It's what people do.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 04:25 am (UTC)(link)Actually, I'd disagree with you there! I know it's not a popular opinion, but I don't think anyone really belongs to him- or herself. Our "freedom" to live is bounded in by all different kinds of factors -- our families, our friends, our bodies, our societies, etc., etc.
Also, it's not so much a matter of "I might make them feel sad," but "I might take a piece of them with me." It's hard enough getting over the death of a loved one, let alone a loved one whom you couldn't protect or save from suicidal circumstances.
