I know exactly what you mean, and I think you have a good point about the motives. However, I'd have an easier time believing you actually just want better gay representation if you didn't have anything to gain from it. Not only are Teen Wolf and Supernatural GAY = CANON fans on the delusional side, but they also use this argument a lot.

I'd be more inclined to believe it if it was said about a show where the person saying it had no horse in this race. :/

That's a good point, about 'not having a horse in the race'. While I do admittedly ship both the pairings in the secret, I'd be happy to see anything with a similar dynamic (presumed straight characters, I mean) becoming canon, I'm fascinated by what sort of reaction having that happen could cause, within fandom and also the media.

There you go. You I believe. :)

(I'm probably burnt out from old arguments about this. Claiming to want better representation but ONLY FOR THIS PAIRING grates on me just a bit.)

Isn't that also kinda bullshit though? I mean, we are going to care more about things we personally want/care about.

All these people seem to forget though, representation doesnt' matter. The focus is and will always be on MONEY. And the heteronormative mainstream was, is and likely always will be the biggest spender. So anybody saying "one step away from being canon" is almost certainly delusional. Ship what you wanna ship, but odds are good a character is floated as immediately gay from the start because they wanna see if that's going to fly.

This is true. Personally, I don't think the media is the place to go to for changes first anyway. It hasn't done anything groundbreaking in terms of social commentary for decades, at least not in the U.S.

Oh I'm going to disagree. Celebrities and athletes and the like form opinions for a lot of people. Which isn't always the best thing, but you want their support if you want things to change. not to the exclusion of other efforts, but it's not something to discount.

I think the OP wasn't complaining about pairing fans who don't care about the larger issues in general, but the ones who use the larger issues as an argument for their ship when those issues *don't* really matter to them.

If that made any sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
OP. I think you can want better gay representation while also desiring that this be fulfilled via your ship becoming canon, because hey why not aim as high as possible? What annoys me is when people pretend their wish for their ship to become canon actually stems from the more respectable motivation of desiring better representation. If you want your ship to be canon because you want your ship to be canon, then say that. Don't pretend it's about gay rights. If Stiles turned out to be bisexual but hooked up with Danny or Isaac, Sterek shippers would flip their shit. Me, yeah I ship these pairings, but I'd be ecstatic just for canon bisexuality.

However, I'd have an easier time believing you actually just want better gay representation if you didn't have anything to gain from it.

But I want to gain queer representation. Is it so selfish to want Stiles to be bi because he's a character I can really relate to? And I want a bi character I can relate to? Sorry Brittany from glee isn't cutting it, I don't know how anyone could relate to her. Her character is as deep as a puddle.

(there have been other characters I can relate to obviously but none that toss off ambiguous comments like Stiles does)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the opposite for me. I find Stiles to be an idiot. I don't relate to him at all, and don't even find him likable, but I wouldn't be offended if he was made to represent us. I'm more offended by how many canon bi or queer characters there are on tv already who aren't ficced by the heteronormatives because they're not 'hot.' If people are genuinely interested in our rights rather than their fap privilege, then they'd be supporting those characters more, but instead a lot of those characters are ignored while the focus (from mostly straight women, you know it's true) is on getting two straight dudes to hook up and be made canon. That's not about our rights, that's about BEING RIGHT, and looking for validation.

*raises hand*

I don't ship Stiles/Derek. At all. But I DO want Stiles to be canonically bisexual and have him hook up with one of the other guys on the show. If that happens to be Derek, cool. If not, that's cool too. Stiles/Danny or Stiles/Issac or Stiles/Boyd would be just as good. And this comes from someone who loves Stiles but doesn't actively ship him with anyone. I just read him as bisexual and think it would be excellent to see that in the show.
