Maybe you just need to try another pairing for a while. I'm not trying to convert you, but Steve/Tony has a lot of crap and crap characterization because it's so popular. Clint/Natasha and Tony/Bruce and Steve/Bucky and all those other pairings might have something new for you, provided you're not an extreme OTP-er. :)

(It's okay if you are, but I thought I'd suggest it anyway.)

AYRT

I'm totally planning on getting onboard of Clint/Natasha ship :) (I kind of am an extreme OTP-er, who wishes she would not be such an extreme OTP-er, because it totally narrows my possibilities :) I like some comics pairings, but there's not a lot of fanfic for them :/ Still, I know what I should do, but I still am so very bitter that I have to take such drastic steps at all x)

*hugs fellow shipper and cries warm tears*

I've seen plenty of Tony/Bruce that's been just as bad with the characterization as Steve/Tony.

So many Bruce/Tony fics seem to totally reverse Bruce and Tony's movie dynamic for some reason O.O With Bruce being the secure confident active one and Tony being the dependent shy passive one. Um, okay?

Or they turn Bruce into some dorky stuttering blushing anime-style girly man. What.

Like I've said elsewhere, if you're going for a dynamic that's very different from canon, be my guest, but please tell us how you actually got there.

Argh, yes. *headdesk* And I really like that pairing and want to read more. But not that!

The closest I can come to an explanation of a) is this: because Tony is 1. very screwed up, and 2. has two movies documenting his screwed-up-ness under his belt, he must be "the screwed-up one" of the Avengers, because he's "the screwed-up one" in his own films compared to Pepper/Rhodey/Happy/etc.

And they find it impossible to wrap their minds around the idea that in spite of how screwed-up he is relative to normal people, he's comparatively the most well-adjusted and secure (and, possibly, the happiest) character of the bunch as of the film's end. Certainly more than the PTSD-afflicted ex-soldier who lost his entire world, the alien whose little brother tried to become a mass-murdering dictator, the eccentric and anti-social assassin who got horrifically mind-fucked and traumatized and killed a load of people, the paranoid and anti-social other assassin who was indoctrinated and trained to kill from childhood, or the guy who spent six years of his life as a fugitive from the law while dealing with the worst personality disorder in the history of mental health conditions.

b) is, I suppose, that good ol' fashioned eye-rolling vicious-cycle Flanderization that happens when people focus too much on how ~adorbs~ the actor is rather than how grim and bitter and savvy the character is.

*wry* Well, that's fandom. I mean, I like fanfiction twisting things around, but it's up to the author to back it up with their writing and make me believe it, and not expect me to interpret the characters just like them by reading the author's mind or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely. But good ones exist, that's all I'm saying. :)

Woot, Steve/Bucky.

And while I agree with you on the main points, I disagree that populair pairings end up more OOC. I've seen plenty of wonky characterizations in less popular pairings, too. It's just that those massively popular pairs tend to go OOC in oddly specific ways as everyone copies from each other, and that there is a much larger quantity of it.

Honestly, I love Clint/Natasha and I love Thor/Loki, but the annoying thing is that even if you do go looking for those pairings there's almost a guarantee Steve/Tony will be there as a secondary pairing with crappy characterization.
