AYRT

I know that DUM-E and JARVIS are both important to Iron Man's plot, I do and I love them, DUM-E and his droopiness especially, but after running into so many stories that made them central to Tony and Steve getting together it kinda started to annoy me. Like, you know, some things are cool if used once, twice, but when they turn into a thing they become unbearable. It was similar with the Superfamily trope for me. As for Peter's character development I think him being raised by, well, anyone else than Aunt May and Uncle Ben just doesn't work but I was cool with an idea of such a cracktastic AU, I thought it was funny and that it could have potential if written well. But then Superfamily started to pop up everywhere and now I can't even think about it without grinding my teeth. (Okay, I don't actually grind my anything while thinking about fanfiction I don't like, but you get my drift :)

As for places in which I look for fic - you're right, of course, but I do try to check LJ Communities (cap_ironman, mainly), as well, but most entries lead to AO3 anyway. As for other possibilities, I don't hold FF.net in very high regard (I mean, there is a lot of great fanfiction there, but you always have to dearch through so much crap to get to the good stuff) and at first I did google some other archives but they looked kinda abandoned... Can you give me some good advice on fic searching? I would anonymously love you forever! :D

Oh man, I feel you so hard on the overdoing. I've pretty much banned myself from Coulson-fic since August because I was afraid I might start disliking him if I kept seeing him elevated to bizarre levels of importance, and I really do NOT want to start disliking him, 'cause I loooooove him and he rules.

My main source of fanfic is rec lists, tbh. I just search for rec lists on google and glance over them, and if I like the look of the reccer's tastes and proclivities, I'll invest time in reading the fics they recced.

My other suggestion is search by association, not category. By which I mean, instead of looking through archives by certain characters/pairings/fandoms, gather some of your favorite stories, and read everything the authors of those stories wrote. Then gather the authors who have written multiple stories that you liked, and check out the stories in those authors' favorites/bookmarks/rec lists. Also, try and see if you can find out which other authors those authors admire, and check out the stories written by those new authors.

Admittedly, this approach unfortunately raises your likelihood of missing solo gems by nonprolific authors, but in a fandom with as much explosive disorganized fic output as the Avengers, it's the most efficient way to get the maximum amount of goodfic while avoiding badfic as much as possible.
