Re: Things that make you immediately stop reading a fanfiction

Power imbalances before the relationship starts. I'm not sure how to explain that better but it would be something like Teacher/Student. But it's less about position and more about personality and what they do to each other. I don't know how to explain it but when I come across it, I know.

Also, character bashing.

And bad formatting.

And... when the main characters do shitty things but the narration frames it in a way to imply we're supposed to agree with them.

I absolutely know what you are talking about in terms of power imbalances. It's definitely a squick for me that has me hitting the back button or not even reading it.

Oh good, someone gets me.

Like, I don't mind if after they get together they agree on some power imbalances or somehow talk about them and make it okay. I don't know, but something there to recognize it during the relationship.

But if it happens before they get together. Nope, I'm out.

This is why Spock and Uhura in the new Star Trek movie kind of squicked me out. Just... why did they have him be her teacher? Why? That was not a necessary plot point! And nobody can argue that that sort of thing isn't an issue in the future, because it was only brought up due to it actually causing an issue in the form of Spock attempting to compensate for potential nepotism and just... ugh.

I may have actually like the pairing fine if it hadn't opened on that note.

I'm similar, I don't mind Spock/Uhura in theory. I just can't get over the fact that he is her instructor when they start a relationship.

Wandering into this conversation late, but yes, I agree - it was not a necessary plot point at all, and it just brought the viewer into the relationship on a bad note, as far as I was concerned. I can't quite understand why they (the writers) thought that was a good idea to introduce the pairing that way. Were we supposed to find that sexy? *confused*
