Things that make you immediately stop reading a fanfiction

[personal profile] themperor 2012-10-20 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What are things that make you hit the back button as quickly as possible when you are reading a fic - even when you are really enjoying it. It can be small or a big things.

One of mine: when you spell it: 'cum.'

Any overly detailed description of semen.

I thought is was spelled that way on purpose, to distinguish it from come. Specifically, that "come" is the orgasm itself and "cum" is the fluid. That's the way dictionaries seem to define them, anyway, but whatever.

Mine is dirty talk, of the whore/bitch/slut/shank variety (talking in general is fine, praise is fine, instruction is fine...but not that.) It just turns me off in such a huge way.

Too many ellipses. Also, sometimes (if I'm in a bad mood) when single digit numbers aren't spelled out.

Mixing up weary and wary. Drives me nuts.

Bad spelling, complete OOC-ness and blocks of text. Instant back button, sometimes I don't even bother reading.

Zelda-bashing.

...Which, uh, is fairly over-specific, but it's my biggest pet peeve... pretty much ever. My main ship for Zelda fandom is Link/separate!Sheik, a LOT of other people with this ship use it as an excuse to bash the hell out of Zelda because she's a 'rival' or some bullshit like that because male ninjas are awesome and female princesses are stupid, apparently, despite Ocarina!Zelda being multifaceted, decently well-rounded, and damn strong, especially for a video game character from 1998, and goddammit there are reasons to like Sheik as a separate character without bashing Zelda, and all three characters basically tie as my favourites for the SERIES, and goddammit I have stopped reading so many Link/Sheik fics because they turn Zelda into some heinous jealous bitch out to steal Link for herself!

...And that turned into a rant.

Okay, let's generalise that - any fic that bashes a character solely because they're a 'rival' to the fic's OTP.

I don't think I have anything like that. I only stop reading if I feel bored.

Starting a story or a chapter with character xy was bored.

I've only found this in one fandom, but fanfics where every other word is italicized because the author thinks half of the fic's words are important.

And, in another fandom, I won't read fics that switch from third person to first between paragraphs. The show in question has first person narration by one character (usually, but not always, to explain what's going on in a scene). Some people think because the show has that type of narration, it's okay to do it in a fic. It's not. Even the show's official books don't switch from first to third (it stays in first person).

Power imbalances before the relationship starts. I'm not sure how to explain that better but it would be something like Teacher/Student. But it's less about position and more about personality and what they do to each other. I don't know how to explain it but when I come across it, I know.

Also, character bashing.

And bad formatting.

And... when the main characters do shitty things but the narration frames it in a way to imply we're supposed to agree with them.

I tend to hang out in smallish fandoms, so I can't be too picky. Minor mistakes are usually forgiven, and I only stop reading if I hit something awful, like blatant OOCness or abuse that wasn't warned for.

I only review the genuinely good fics though, because unasked-for concrit causes too much drama.

Childish behaviour from adults who in canon never act that way. I can deal with a certain amount of OOC, but that's an instant closed tab.

then/than

And most of the time I can just BARELY click away before leaving a comment to the author about it, too. Goddamn that drives me crazy. And then sometimes I give them the benefit of the doubt and think "oh, it's just a typo" and invariably it'll come up again ;_;

X and Y have, canonically, an incredibly fucked-up relationship, or one that would just be weird if interpreted romantically. Maybe they're enemies (who actually dislike each other; not like Doof and Perry or something), maybe there's a large age difference (X being twice Y's age, not like, five years apart), maybe Y is abusive to X.

But in the fic, everything is sunshine and roses! X and Y are perfectly, madly in love and everyone around them thinks this is just peachy except for Z, that one homophobic/bitchy character who just hates them irrationally because Z wasn't loved enough as a child or some bullshit. Bonus points if Z brings up the reason why X and Y's relationship might get the side-eye as their main reason for not wanting to see X and Y together, and everybody else is just like "STOP BEING A HATER Z THEY'RE IN ~LOOOOOVE".

This is probably a common hate, but very OOC characters. Most other things I dislike about a fic won't automatically make me backpedal, but writing established characters poorly will send me out of there immediately.

When people use 'Y'all' as singular. I've actually stopped watching shows because they did that too.

Contrived character-bashing or OOC-ness in order to facilitate an "issue" or make another character/pairing look good in comparison. I do not care about issues or agendas in fanfic. At all. I want to see characters I love doing things and interacting in logical ways that satisfy my craving for material the canon can't supply.

My issues with fic are more focused on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. But keeping people in character is a very close second. Here are my main peeves though...

1. When someone writes dialogue like this:

"I like cats", said Johnny.

"Do you like cats"? asked Johnny.

"I like dogs" said Kate.

2. When people put a comma before the word "because."

3. When people change tenses when they shouldn't; like starting in present and ending in past for no apparent reason.

4. Misspelling character names. Or messing up characterization in general.

5. Poorly written fic as a whole.

OOC is the number one thing. I can tolerate bad grammar and stupid plottage and getting canon details wrong. Even "portraying screwed up behavior as romantic" (very common in my favorite pairing for some reason) can hold my attention sometimes, in a train-wreck kind of way. But I can't stand OOC.

Also, when there's a pairing that would be socially unacceptable in canon (older/younger, hero/villain, etc) and they get together in the fic without any mention of how they work around these issues and what other people will think.
