Holy tl;dr, Batman!

/hypocrite

Honestly, a lot of slash pairings wouldn't work well in canon, not because the characters are incompatible, but because the story necessary for them to get together plausibly in canon would be incompatible with the structure and goals of the show/series/whatever. Either you'd need a huge digression in which the basic premise of the show is thrown out the window for half a season and/or all the story arcs grind to a screeching halt, or you'd need a romance arc that works with the the show's format and setting but does the characters a huge disservice in the process (I'm looking at you, Buffy/Spike).

+1 about B/S. I loved BtVS, but I stopped watching during that whole 'romance gone wrong' storyline. If I wanted that sort of thing for my escapism fantasy TV, I'd just go to work, and talk to the clients in my caseload.

Everything you said x1000. Add Mulder and Scully to that list with Buffy and Spike.

idk, I think a lot of the frustration people feel about their ships never even being an option for canon is that if one of the characters were the other gender, it could easily be (and possibly would have been) canon. Dean/Castiel in S4, for example, is the story of an angel rebelling against heaven for the sake of a human. What in there is incompatible with a romance?

Buffy/Spike was necessary to show Buffy's struggle at being pulled out of heaven. She hated it, hated living, so she did something repulsive and destructive by sleeping with Spike and lying to the scoobies. In her confusion of believing that death was her gift, she thought she was like Spike now, and that he was the only one who understood her (he was, at that point in time). She used him to feel something, to prove to herself that she was alive, and only once she understood this did she go back to being herself

none of this is conjecture, Buffy herself spelt out all these things...i thought it was a brilliant story arch showing that even the 'best' of us can do fucked up things, and that our real friends can still accept us

That was all very well and good for Buffy, but it was Spike's character that was thrown under a fleet of Greyhounds to enable that amazing development of hers. He was the one done a huge disservice, IMO, and only recovered once he was far, far away from her and being her drama catalyst.

The one good thing about it was that it was a flip of the usual recipe of a female character being ruined in order to develop a male character, but I don't like that anyone needs to go down for someone else to be complex.

oh, i totally agree with you, but Spike being the whipping boy in every situation on BTVS and Angel never wavered, so it was consistent, at least

i was never in a Buffy internet fandom, but most of what i've read from fans many years later is that they rejected Spike simply because he wan't ~Angel~ and that he is vile because 'he tried to rape her'...the fact that he ended up being the chosen vampire with a soul who could yield the amulet, who sacrificed himself to close the hellmouth meant nothing because omg!angel is tru luv!

...danm, now i need to watch the series all over again, i just realised how much i miss it

Yeah, him being the universal whipping boy is very true. I have no idea why they wanted to take such a wicked awesome character and break him down, build him up, break him down, etc. And that's funny, what I got from the internet fandom was that Spike was her twu wuv and Angel was the ponce. But both interpretations are off. Angel and Spike were the same for Buffy, highly toxic despite their aptitude for genuine heroism and love.

I just finished BtVS season one! Dated in some ways (lol what is fashion and filming budget), but the script and acting holds up great. I'm looking forward to season two and Spike's debut, it'll be great to see him at his best and baddest again.

THE BOOTS! my gawd, buffy's knee-high boots in seasons 1...i always imaged that they had a very small budget and they were SMG's favourite boots, so she just wore them constantly

my fave quote:
Buffy: Spike! What are you doing here? FIVE words or less
Spike, counting on his fingers: Out. For. A. Walk. Bitch

This this this! And this is my arguement against Sterek. It would take such a long arc to get them plausibly together that it would derail the show. It's not just a matter of them both turning out to be bisexual -- they'd have to actually grow to like each other.

Months late, but:

you'd need a romance arc that works with the the show's format and setting but does the characters a huge disservice in the process

Given how distorted a lot of characters become in shipping fics, I think that a large percentage of the shippers would be perfectly fine with the characters being done a huge disservice just as long as it ended up with the two characters being hooked up.
