I grew up growing to cons with my parents, and when I was a kid (in the 80s) it always seemed like there were no other kids - or even many teenagers - at these things. That started to change in the late 90s and while obviously there have always been child and teen fans (I was one, after all), I think fandom has skewed a bit younger over the last 15 years than it did before.

When people get weird about "old" people in fandom, I think back to those times when I was the only person under 16 in a room full of folks with graying hair, wearing buttons that referenced scifi novels I hadn't had a chance to read yet and throwing out jokes about Doctor Who episodes I'd never seen because our PBS station didn't like to air anything that pre-dated Tom Baker (even though Pertwee episodes weren't even all that old at that point).
