As another old geezer according to fandom standards, I say we start a club for all the old farts of fandom. We can sit around and laugh at the younguns and yell at people to get off our lawn and talk about the good ol' days of IRC.

I get a lot more weirded out by 12 year olds writing porn than by 35+ year olds writing porn/being in fandom.

The only reason I am a little "hmm" at 35+ people in fandom is because I've already lost almost all interest in writing fic or participating in fandom, and I'm only 20. So it's not a judgement on anyone, it's just that I can't see myself being in your place.

I kinda get this. I'm still in my 20s but lol when I see/hear people complaining that "omg I'm 20 next year, I'm so old!" as though no longer being a teenager means you're a grandma/pa now.

But the funny thing is, I did the exact same thing. And had a mini-freak out about 25 for some reason. So although I find it funny I also understand. I'll still do what older people do to me and say "you're still young ffs!" though! Anyway, I agree there's no age limit on fandom.

36 years old and I plan on staying as long as there's something interesting to me. Fandom is awesome!

Also, when I got into fandom most people were a lot older than I, so I never made the fandom=teenagers connection in my head. That's something I only encountered since reading fandomsecrets, and to be honest, it's weirding me out a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally take pleasure in the fact that all the actors/celebs/whatever that people like to cry over on Tumblr because they're "OMG TOO OLD FOR MEEE" are generally right around my age.

Turned 59 yesterday. When I first got into fandom, there was no internet. Too old for fandom is a young person's concept.

Coming from a 25-year-old,
35 isn't that much older.

I don't consider myself a fandom geezer, but you aren't one, either.

[personal profile] author_by_night 2012-10-20 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom people think there's an age limit? I mean, I admit when I first got into fandom I was sort of like "um okay, what are all of these 35+ year olds doing here?" But then I joined another website where most of the members were at least 35... plus, I was fifteen and my impression of the internet was skewed by everyone telling me that anyone who wanted to talk was probably a 65 year old stalker. (Ah, the 2000s were so simple.)

I can understand why non-fandom people might be confused by it, but non-fandom people generally don't understand much about fandom anyway.

I think it depends more on the fandom than the person's age. For example, I'd get older fans who are into fandoms that are aimed for almost everyone, like Star Wars or Harry Potter or A:TLA, but I'd side-eye older fans who are into very specific age media like iCarly and Hannah Montana and the likes.

it's precisely because you have the ability to laugh at stuff in fandom that you are deemed too old...rather than admit to themselves that their flailings and dramaz are insignificant, they label you (us) 'old'

I think sometimes people's participation in fandom evolves. Like, you might be a fic writer or a con-goer when you're younger, but you do con panels when you're older. That being said, I know forty-somethings who write fic, fifty-somethings who cosplay (characters that age) and sixty-somethings who go to cons. And there's nothing wrong with that. No such things as too old for fandom.

You're at about the median age for people in my main fandom. A lot of my fandom friends are in their 30s and 40s, and a few of them are in their 50s. I'm 33 right now and I certainly don't feel too old.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of wish there was an unspoken rule of not discussing age in fandom. There's so many stereotypes associated with certain age groups, and older fans, especially those with kids, seem to have such disdain for younger ones because they're not parents or "experienced" or some such bullshit.

I think people would get along much better if no one really knew how old everyone else was.

I turn 25 in two months and I laugh at the "zomggettingold!!!1!" reactions too. I'll still be in fandom when I'm 25, and I'll probably still be in fandom when I'm 50. Different fandoms of course (well, probably, I do have a tendency to "revisit" fandoms after a couple years of downtime), but whatever form fandom takes in the future I plan on being a part of it.

And I feel no shame. Heck, just last night I was discussing a cartoon with a coworker who is older than me (let's just say I didn't pull the number 50 out of nowhere), and it ended up being just like squeeing online with fellow fans. There was no discomfort of, "we're too old to be watching what we're discussing", neither of us gave a damn, which was perfect. It was amazing.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm about to turn 35 this year and I'm still in fandom and loving it. I didn't get into fandom until later than a lot of people, in my mid-twenties as opposed to my teenage years and such, so it irritates me when people seem to think that once they get in their twenties that they're 'too old' for it. Fandom has been around for a long, long time, and I know that there's a lot of people much older than me that are still involved in it.

Like other have said, there's some aspects of it that I'm not so interested in any more, like going to conventions, but I still enjoy reading/writing fic even though I may not be as voracious about it as I used to be.

I do find some humor in people who are freaking out because they're in their twenties and think that their 'fandom life' is over, but it kind of bothers me too.

My step-grandmother LOVES fanfiction. She says it helped her learn English when she first came to America, watching Star Trek and reading fanfiction.

It's actually pretty hilarious when my Halmuhnee wants to geek out with me. We went to go watch The Avengers together and she was so excited. I'm pretty sure we made a whole bunch of bystanders go "WTF?!"
