Mid-forties, and I didn't even join the internet fandom until 2002. I've been a fan since I was sixteen, and can't imagine a time when I won't be. (The Tolkien fandom does tend to have older fans who were brought up with the books and still love them)
I also read fanfic by older authors simply because it is generally better quality (there are a couple of exceptions - some very talented younger writers).
A lot of the authors I read have been writing for decades, they just pursued other careers (although some have had work published, too). I also moved from writing o-fic for years to fanfic, as I find it more enjoyable to both write and read.

Fandom is for every-one, of any age.
