Yeah, I've been afraid to speak up, too. I know the slippery-slope implications and all, but really. It's LJ's sandbox and they can ban kiddie porn drawings and fic if they want to, and I can't say I'll miss 'em.

Honestly, the arguments about freedom of speech and censorship are somewhat beside the point. The sad fact of the matter is that Six Apart are running a business here and have a perfect right to decide what they do and don't want to allow people to host on their servers. That's all it comes down to.

Exactly. It's not a matter of censorship, it's common sense. People get in trouble for porn depicting minors. Why is this all of a sudden shocking?

Look, it's got nothing to do with what I want. Personally, I don't approve of censorship. But the fact of the matter is that Six Apart are running a business and when push comes to shove, they have to think of the bottom line. It's far safer to piss off a group of people who will only go and find somewhere else to post than it is to alienate another core section of their userbase - minors and the parents of minors. Like it or not, there are children on Livejournal, and it's far better from a business perspective to piss off a few fans doing things that most people outside fandom would find rather dubious anyway then be seen as a safe haven for CHILD MOLESTORS. That's not being judgmental, that's not being a stupid fuck - it's just the way the world works. Sorry.

What, have LJers never used teh internets before? I thought everyone was used to The Unwashed Masses freaking out over any miniscule sliver of a hint that there's TEH SMEX. And making your point on LJ of all place isn't going to change this general opinion... it just makes fandom look like a bunch of naive folks.

Don't you know LJ is actually made for fandom and that if they do anything fandom doesn't like it's because they're a bunch of mean evil corporate hypocrites? It's not like they have a business to run or anything.

where was the 'kid' in that image? if you can show me the 'kiddie' porn from the images that got the artists banned, I'll be inclined to shut up.

there were no 12 year olds represented in those images so I'm not sure where people are getting off saying that it is KIDDIE PORN OMGUGUYZ.

I'll agree that LJ can define what they want through their service. if they choose to start banning people for using the word purple in their entries, it's well within their right to do so.

just call a spade and spade. LJ needs to be specific and say 'no more images where it's not clear the two represented are adults' or 'anyone using the word purple in their entries, linking to anything that has purple, even if it's behind a locked posted, purple will get you banned' and people will be fine.
