Their relationship is so contrived and they like each other because the story said so. Kirito is so obviously a self-insert Gary-Stu while Asuna's just the perfect waifu figure, who's a "strong female character" but still needs a man to protect her.

And now Kirito has to save her from a creepy older dude (for the third time) from marrying her comatose body by going into the land of fairies.

God, I hate this show.

LOL that's exactly how I viewed it. I saw Kirito as the self-insert guy (he even almost had a harem cliche going in the beginning complete with token loli little sister character) and then Asuna the perfect waifu who is a great cook and a bit of a tsundere before they become official. Ugh. No thanks. -_-

Same. I know it's not perfect by any means but I'm just captivated by the game world setting and the main relationship right now.

Me too. I kind of get why they went in the direction that they're going and the concept is intriguing, but I don't think it would have hurt anything to stretch the first game out for an entire season, develop some of the side characters a little bit more. Heathcliff kind of felt flat by the time his reveal came along, they could have taken an extra couple episodes and really fleshed out his character.

Asuna is so fucking lacking in agency that it makes me rage. She exists to be Kirito's waifu and nothing more. I don't think she makes a single decision for herself throughout the series, and now the cherry on top is she's the perfect princess waiting to be ~rescued.
This series honestly astonishes me with how Kirito becomes even MORE of a Special Snowflake in every episode, and how Asuna loses even more agency. I wouldn't have thought it was possible.

MEH. I knew they were going to get together since the beginning, but when they actually did get together I lost all interest in the series and dropped it. They were pretty boring. They made a good team, but the romance wasn't anything special.
