Huh, Maka/Soul is actually one of the two hetero couples I like (the other 423.2 being all m/m pairings). I found that I usually cannot ship characters as friends, because I always think about how they will drift apart after they both get their own love interests. Now that I think about it this is why I was very happy about the possibility of canon Xena/Gabriel when I was little; not because I really cared about seeing them in a romantic relationship, but because goddammit, they have each other, they need no man in their lives, a guy between them would ruin their beautiful friendship!

I definitely understand that.

On one hand, I love them as partners because that's so rare. On the other hand, their relationship is exactly what I want in a romantic relationship and they're so comfortably domestic that I can't help but want them together as a couple, too. I believe they won't ever become a real canon couple though, so I get both canon!partnership and romantic!headcanon! :D

You're going to be disappointed when you read the later chapters of the manga, then. :X

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? I've read the manga and I don't feel that way.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-21 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it has all the signs of romance. Especially with how jealous Maka constantly is.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't she jealous only once, and that's because there's this girl who might not even be real that's creepily stalking Soul? And her jealousy also stems from her insecurity with her own skills, since she's being compared to all the top battlers in the academy and Soul just became a rare death scythe. I see it as a case where she's jealous for more reasons than because she wants Soul to herself, but that's me.

I appreciate platonic hetero relationships as well.

I just don't like it when fans try to say this about one ship to make their ship seem more likely.

I really like them as platonic BFFs and partners, too! Also, I ship Maka/Crona, so I'm just (as usual) going "aahh, please don't ruin my fantasies" at the canon. XD

Yeah, I liked that at the beginning they could just be read as close friends, and started getting disappointed when they became more obviously romantic.

Though that had more to do with how it effected Maka's character more than Soul's.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for reminding me why I like Soul/Maka so much! Yep, they are one of the few male/female relationships that gets a lot of attention but it's more about the partnership and friendship rather than anything romantic.

It's easy for the fandom to ship them because they complement each other so well, but it doesn't really force it down your throats in the actual series.

I've read the manga except the stuff on the moon and I still haven't seen anything explicitly romantic, which makes me happy to have at least ONE close male/female relationship that is forced together for romance sake alone.
