I write first person as a main character because the source material did, nothing to do with "self-insert".

Just because you've got a good reason to doesn't make it good. It's awkward as fuck and is very hard to do well. Most fic writers just aren't that good.

My point stands. Some fic writers can pull it off, and sometimes it's essential, therefore blasting all first person is churlish.

Most fic writers aren't that good at writing, period, so by your argument no-one should write or read fic.
