I'm guessing that you've never been given the "short hair is only for lesbians"/"girls with short hair are ugly"/"men won't find you attractive without long hair" lectures. It takes confidence for a woman to cut her hair short since everyone MUST have an opinion on it.

this so much, goddam.

i got so. much. shit. when i cut my hair and from fucking strangers on the street, too.

if i had a nickel every time someone asked me if i was a lesbian or shouted 'dyke' at me from moving vehicles...

That's ridiculous behaviour! Sorry you were treated like that, anon. What morons.

Yes. My dad still slips little barbs into conversation like "I just wish you would wear your hair in a more feminine way..."

And I got called a dyke at school allllll day long every day for WEEKS right after I cut it.

AYRT

No I haven't. I didn't know people still did that. Wow, that sucks.

THIS.

I had to shave my hair for medical reasons. You would not believe the amount of shit I got for it, and from complete strangers, too.

Apparently a person's sexual oritentation is directly proportionate to the length of their hair.

Yeah, this. All I heard when I cut my hair super-short was how much I looked like a dyke. And, not that I found being thought of as a lesbian a bad thing, but the derogatory nature of the word 'dyke' is hurtful. I really liked having super-short hair, but I got tired of getting shit so I grew it out a little.

You know what's really odd? In the town where I work, one of the symbols of being an upper middle class woman is cutting your hair short. Seriously. There's like this club of women who are in a certain tax bracket, and they all have close-cropped hair.

Contrast that with the kind of crap you've described, and it's weird as hell.

or the boyfriend (more like almost boyfriend) who's weirdly possessive of your hair when you haven't even started dating. "I like my women with long hair--the longer the better!" Good thing I'm not your woman, bub.
