Nah. He just got too big to fit into the costume they'd measured him for. He's mentioned it in several interviews, some more funny than others.

iirc from the more serious one, Branagh actually told him he didn't HAVE to get as big as he possibly could. Which made me a little sad because my family is surrounded by body issues in both genders and I wondered if he thought he had to be. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to fit the role, though. Hemsworth seems to be a pretty together guy, at least from what I can tell (obviously not much, seeing as I don't know him).

Oh good. I feel better now. That's actually kind of funny. Ha~

I... I think he just did it because he could, really. I mean, I don't know him but he always seemed comfortable with himself before he got the roll and he hasn't seemed to change since he did bulk up. Maybe he even used getting the role as an excuse to bulk up because he just wanted to. As long as he's not unhealthy it's all good.

I hope I don't sound too forward or step on your toes when I wish you and your family better days without body issues.

It is funny. I wish I could find where he was talking about it in a group, because someone paraphrased the story as "yeah. He went back home and threw around trees until he didn't fit in his costume anymore". It was amusing.

Ugh, I wish I could find it, there was a thread on reddit where a guy was like, look at this pic of me and a celebrity I saw! and it was supposed to be Chris Hemsworth but everyone in the thread called BS because he was pretty scrawny looking. I could totally see it if he was in between movies but IIRC Thor 2 had just started filming.

Maybe it was an old photo? He was slim as George Kirk. But if they said it was recent... yeah, no.

Didn't the same thing happen with Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises? He got too bulky and overshadowed Tom Hardy.

But Hardy was crazy-ass big! o___o I didn't think Bale overshadowed him at ALL.

Bale was originally too bulky, they made him slim down before shooting, although that might have been for the first movie, not compared to Hardy. I can't find any sources so I might just be making this all up.

It might have happened in TDKR, but it was certainly the case for the first film - he came in all beefed up and Nolan told him to slim down because he looked rigoddamndiculous. You can see it in the film in some scenes, IIRC; he continued to slim down a little while filming.
