As others have said, it might help to put some distance between the actor and their character. I mean, Hemsworth is a big dude anyway. Farm boy and all, so that most likely had a hand in him being believable (in so far as anyone would be) as a big Norse viking dude with a hammer. And as I recall, Branagh told him he didn't HAVE to bulk up incredibly to do the part. So... idk if that helps you at all in this case.

I can agree with you in cases like Christian Bale where he put the weight on and took it off and put it on again really rapidly though. That's absolutely unhealthy.

Not the OP, but the way Bale does that does alarm me. It makes me wonder what it's going to do to him in the long run. Yo-yo-ing generally isn't a good thing, even when it's for your art.
