HELP! Flies in my rubbish bin

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in the UK. I've just moved into a new house with a large group of people, where we have a recycling bin but no general waste bin (stolen over the summer, probably) and we don't know when we're getting a replacement bin. So naturally at some point someone started putting the general waste in the recycling bin, in the mistaken belief that those generous people fom the council would say 'hey ho' and take it anyway. They didn't, btw.

I didn't realise this until today when I took the recyclable rubbish out this morning and found several weeks of rotting food waste in torn bags in the bin! The plan was to re-bag them and put them in one of our neighbours' bins the night before collection day but every time I try to get the bags out a huge cloud of flies comes out and I have to run away shrieking. I don't want to think about what else might be in there!

Does anyone have a handy trick for either killing all the flies or shielding myself from them for long enough to get the bags out of the bin? I think taping binbags over my clothes and head is going to be my only option, otherwise (I have goggles and a filter to breathe through, but I'll feel pretty darn stupid!).

I can only think of bags over clothes and goggles too :(

Do you have large binbags? You can wear them and pretend you're an exterminator!

If you can, completely clean the recycling bin after. It should stop flies from going back and help with the smell.

Good luck!
