No, it's nothing like bipolar disorder. There is no cure for bipolar disorder, it takes an average of ten years for a person to be diagnosed, medication helps only to suppress symptoms, and there is no great benefit from being bipolar, because bipolar doesn't make you creative.

My girlfriend has bipolar disorder. She's the one who came up with the metaphor (simile?), so I'm pretty sure it still stands. Of course, it's my fault for not wording it better (meaning don't insult her).

I can insult her metaphor all I want if it's wrong. There is a correlation between bipolar disorder and creative people; there is no concretely proven causation.

Sincerely,

Someone who has suffered from BPD since before she was 16 and doesn't appreciate uninformed people trying to make her disorder sound cute

Sorry. It made better sense when she said it and I shouldn't have tried to stick my commentary onto it.

bipolar doesn't make you creative.

Thank you.

I get so tired of this meme that mental illness = magic art powah!

Do I think my PTSD has informed my art? Yep.

Do I think I wouldn't be a creative person if not for having experienced trauma? Fuck that, no.

What I write might be less grimdark, maybe. But creativity does not come from having shit to deal with.

Yeah, I'm like, do I have a much greater understanding of human emotion? Yes. Does that make me more creative? No.
