Let's not forget about required secondary powers, like the ability to keep your organs in your body when you can run at the speed of light.

Seriously, superpowers are only cool because we don't have them. It's like bipolar disorder; sure, those with BPD are more creative, but they're also more likely to kill themselves, and there's medication that one should definitely take!

If you do not suffer from a severe form of BPD yourself, kindly shut the fuck up. Suicide is only at 20% of bipolar sufferers, and medication is a highly contentious area for those with mental health issues.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
da, but 20% is pretty damn high...

but the other anon's comparison is really fucking weird. I have bipolar disorder and if it makes me more "creative" (which... it doesn't), it's utterly useless.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, if you got cancer that had a 20 percent chance of killing you -- and that's not counting indirect suicides, e.g., self-medicating with tobacco/food/alcohol until a chronic disease developed -- no way would you be psyched. Come on.

I didn't realize the figure was 20%. Is that just including people who actually commit suicide, or does it account for people with suicidal urges? Most of the other people with bipolar disorder that I know have struggled with suicidal urges, so 20% for that seems low- but that could just be that I have too small a sample pool (or skewed bias since I've had so many problems with it myself).

Actual suicides. Not all bipolar sufferers are suicidal, though, and there are certainly instances where antidepressants (bipolar treatment usually includes an upper and a mood stabilizer) have caused suicide, so the numbers may be skewed because of that.

Ah, thanks.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's nothing like bipolar disorder. There is no cure for bipolar disorder, it takes an average of ten years for a person to be diagnosed, medication helps only to suppress symptoms, and there is no great benefit from being bipolar, because bipolar doesn't make you creative.

My girlfriend has bipolar disorder. She's the one who came up with the metaphor (simile?), so I'm pretty sure it still stands. Of course, it's my fault for not wording it better (meaning don't insult her).
Edited (misspelling) 2012-10-23 00:51 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I can insult her metaphor all I want if it's wrong. There is a correlation between bipolar disorder and creative people; there is no concretely proven causation.

Sincerely,

Someone who has suffered from BPD since before she was 16 and doesn't appreciate uninformed people trying to make her disorder sound cute

Sorry. It made better sense when she said it and I shouldn't have tried to stick my commentary onto it.

bipolar doesn't make you creative.

Thank you.

I get so tired of this meme that mental illness = magic art powah!

Do I think my PTSD has informed my art? Yep.

Do I think I wouldn't be a creative person if not for having experienced trauma? Fuck that, no.

What I write might be less grimdark, maybe. But creativity does not come from having shit to deal with.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm like, do I have a much greater understanding of human emotion? Yes. Does that make me more creative? No.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Bipolar Disorder /= BPD

BPD = Borderline Personality Disorder

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Both can be used, actually, though I tend to say bipolar because it's clearer. BPD also stands for bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

I didn't know either existed, actually. Sorry if there was any confusion.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I know plenty of other people have said this but...no. Having any mental disorder doesn't make you more creative. Bipolar, or any other mental disorder, isn't some magic creativity generator. Have there been creative people who've had it? Yes, the same with various other mental disorders, and people who have no mental disorder at all.

I know you've said 'My girlfriend said it, and she has it so!' but the thing is? She can have it and still be wrong about it making someone more creative.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, people seem awful eager to display their sore rear ends over this one.

Way I see your comment it was "Mutant powers are like being bipolar because everyone thinks it's cool but they don't have to live with the downsides"

To which people respond with 'HOW DARE YOU! Bipolar disorder is not cool you don't know what you're talking about because you don't have to live with the downside!'

And then there are the people trying to argue that it doesn't increase the liklyhood of a suicide attempt? What are they trying to say there? 'You're wrong about the downside, Bipolar really is as great as eveyone who doesn't have it thinks it is?'

My two cents is that the problem is that "they're more creative" part. I have a mild form of Bipolar disorder (Cyclothymia) and I don't think I'm any more or less creative than I'd be without it.
It's a pain in the ass - one I can thankfully deal with pretty well, but still a pain in the ass - so I did raise an eyebrow when someone tried to compare it to some kind of superpower. Superpowers - specifically the one used as an example - do have a plus side. Bipolar disorder doesn't: what the hell IS the plus side of it?

That is not how bipolar works and also go fall in a hole. Filled with leeches.
