Well, think of it this way: Bilbo had a sword and Gollum didn't have any weapon, and is also probably weaker. If Gollum had actually attacked him, Bilbo would have killed him. So cheating to win the game was actually the more merciful choice. Seriously, I would have been like "What's skinny, ugly, and about to get stabbed for picking the wrong fight?"

It was my distinct impression that Gollum was far more dangerous than Bilbo, sword or not. Eating him was a real threat, wasn't it?

Bilbo's freaked out by him, sure, who wouldn't be? Still, at end of it all they're the same size, Bilbo's probably stronger, and it's really hard for an unarmed person to kill a person with a sword.

But--maybe I'm remembering this wrong--didn't he hunt and kill goblins to eat without any weapon? I know he would usually have the ring for an advantage in hunting in the tunnels, but the scene seems kind of pointless if Bilbo could have just taken him when Gollum went to kill him. He gets a chance to kill him when he's invisible, but in a fight I think Gollum would be far more vicious.

Well, Bilbo's not exactly a hardened killer, and "stab it" is hardly his go-to when solving problems. He'd much rather not have to fight. But that doesn't mean he can't or won't. And IIRC, Gollum wants to eat him, but Bilbo draws his sword, and Gollum doesn't want to fight him so he suggests the riddle game. Which implies that Gollum knew that 'guy my size who has a sword' wasn't a fight he could win.

True--but still, in the context of the secret, even if Bilbo had a good chance against Gollum in a fight, cheating seems like a better way to try to avoid getting eaten than fighting to the death. I mean, even if there's a good chance Gollum won't be successful in eating Bilbo, I think if that's his intention, cheating is a good policy makes sense to me for Bilbo!

Agreed. It was the better policy for Bilbo and that's why he did it. I'm just saying that if he hadn't, it would have most likely been Gollum that died, so OP's griping about the fact that Bilbo cheated is doubly silly.

In the book itself it is said that Gollum is very able to overcome a single orc when attacking from behind and do not forget that he can see in the dark.

In The Two Towers he pretty easily overpowers Sam even though the hobbits make use of their weapons.
Bilbo was only one hobbit without any aid and he was scared and lost in the dark. Also Bilbo wasn't combat-trained whereas Gollum was a skilled, sharp-toothed hunter with great reflexes.
I dunno, I'm pretty sure Gollum didn't have any disadvantages.
