I remember my niece being unhappy that Bilbo cheated.

Because cheating at a riddle game in order to not get eaten is sooooooooo much worse than telling a guy that unless he beats you at a riddle game, you're gonna eat him. SO much worse, guys. It's also murder if you overpower and shoot a guy who's forcing you to suck his dick at gunpoint, by the way.

Of course, I know you're a troll from the way you phrased this, but there are actually people out there who do logic in this fashion.

(btw, I love that art. Where's it from?)

I mean, I can see not liking it - it's not a positive thing for him to do - but it seems strange to be something to hate him for, especially since Gollum would have killed his ass if he hadn't cheated, and since he was being influenced by the extraordinary power of the ring.

I don't know. Seems like a weird position, but whatever, I guess.

Does no one remember that the Ring makes someone want it? Of course Bilbo would do anything to get such a trinket as that's the influence of the object.

He didn't cheat. Gollum misunderstood him and Bilbo wasn't going to argue with the strange creature that wanted to eat him.

I kind of like it when the "hero" can be a bit of an asshole. That Bilbo was a tricksy hobbit. Besides, when the alternative is getting eaten, you get a by. Bilbo just wanted to get through the cave and find his peeps, he didn't ask for a riddle match and he didn't ask for the ring. Bilbo might not have won the ring fair and square, but Gollum certainly lost it by all rights.

[personal profile] visp 2012-10-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, think of it this way: Bilbo had a sword and Gollum didn't have any weapon, and is also probably weaker. If Gollum had actually attacked him, Bilbo would have killed him. So cheating to win the game was actually the more merciful choice. Seriously, I would have been like "What's skinny, ugly, and about to get stabbed for picking the wrong fight?"

Sure, Bilbo cheated (however unintentionally at first), but Smeagol was planning to cheat too, by killing and eating Bilbo regardless of who won. And the Ring was never really his to begin with, or does the fact that he murdered his supposed best friend Deagol to get it not even five minutes after he became aware of its existence not matter? I like Smeagol too, and I do see him as an incredibly tragic figure, but despite the Ring's influence he cannot be held blameless for the overwhelming majority of his actions. Also, I can't see how it's fair to blame Bilbo for the fact that the Ring chose to abandon Gollum at that time. Remember, it had a will of its own. It may not have expected to be picked up by a hobbit, but it definitely had no intention of staying with Gollum any longer. The issue of Bilbo cheating in the riddle game is ultimately irrelevant in the face of that fact.

When losing means getting eaten, cheating is pretty standard for a hero. (Hero meaning the person in that role, not meaning the guy one necessarily likes best.)

To be fair, if Bilbo DIDN'T take the Ring from Gollum, Gollum probably would've either been eventually killed once Sauron started hunting for the Ring in earnest, or would've been driven even more crazy because of the Ring.

Also, Gollum murdered for that Ring. He didn't earn it fair and square, either. In comparison, Bilbo had a chance to kill Gollum, but decided not to.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You're supposed to dislike that he cheated. Tolkien liked giving his heros some rather unheroic moments. Especially the hobbits, because well, they're not really the heroic type to begin with. Cheating wasn't the heroic thing to do, but it was the hobbit thing to do - ie the relatable, more "human" action.

What is even happening in this thread? LOL

I am never getting eaten in the dark by a creature who talks to himself and has eyes like lamps if I can get out of it. Verbally tricking said creature to protect yourself AND THEN HAVING MERCY BECAUSE YOUR CODE OF HONOR PREVENTS YOU FROM HARMING SOMEONE UNARMED WHO IS PITIFUL AND LONELY does not seem worthy of hatred to me.

Hate me instead of Bilbo because if someone tries to kill me, there will be ball kicking and hair pulling and all manner of cheating to stay alive going on.

Are you forgetting that Smeagol strangled his own cousin to get the Ring in the first place?

Compared to that, I find it pretty hard to get worked up about Bilbo cheating in a riddle contest to save his own life. I'd have done the same thing and so would you.

Um, Biblo asked an idle question out loud, Gollum accepted it as a riddle and then Gollum actually protested. By the rules of the riddle-game, Gollum accepted the question as valid by trying to answer, instead of ignoring it and asking Bilbo for a proper riddle. It was an accident, Biblo didn;t do it on purpose. And Biblo gave him three tries. It was basically luck-Biblo is luckier than Matrim Cauthon is some ways, and Biblo is smart enough to take advantage of it to avoid being eaten. Let me repeat that: Gollum was planning to eat him, no matter how things turned out, i.e he wasn't being honest. Biblo was only saved because he had the ring, which means he could turn invisible and sneak behind him. It is also worth pointing out that Biblo did what Gollum would not have, and spared the other person's life. He could have killed him, and he decided not to, and thta is why he, unlike Gollum, could escape the ring. (Now, things are slightly different in the original version, before Tolkien realized the ring was in fact The Ring, but that is neither here nor there.)

If someone threatens to kill and eat you for wandering into the wrong cave, you are under no moral obligation to play by the rules.

He was avoiding being eaten and acted like a dick to Gollum, but it seems justified. Plus, the ring finds its bearer, remember. Sauron used Oan technology for that, I guess?
