You're supposed to dislike that he cheated. Tolkien liked giving his heros some rather unheroic moments. Especially the hobbits, because well, they're not really the heroic type to begin with. Cheating wasn't the heroic thing to do, but it was the hobbit thing to do - ie the relatable, more "human" action.
