I am never getting eaten in the dark by a creature who talks to himself and has eyes like lamps if I can get out of it. Verbally tricking said creature to protect yourself AND THEN HAVING MERCY BECAUSE YOUR CODE OF HONOR PREVENTS YOU FROM HARMING SOMEONE UNARMED WHO IS PITIFUL AND LONELY does not seem worthy of hatred to me.
Hate me instead of Bilbo because if someone tries to kill me, there will be ball kicking and hair pulling and all manner of cheating to stay alive going on.

This. It reminds me of the people who were pissed off at Hermione for adding the hex to the list of signatories in Dumbledore's Army, and tried to justify Marietta's actions by saying "even if the students were genuinely in fear for their lives because of Voldemort's return, the school rules said no clubs and rules are rules."
There's always some idiots who will take their character's side, no matter how ridiculous the justifications have to be.

In the words of Fred Durst, we are in agreeance.

Sometimes I think people who are film fans forget how fucking scary Gollum is.

I agree with a commenter somewhere else in this thread who says that Gollum in the movies is often really funny which masks how dangerous and scary he is.

I'm looking forward to that confrontation being really scary too!
