Um, Biblo asked an idle question out loud, Gollum accepted it as a riddle and then Gollum actually protested. By the rules of the riddle-game, Gollum accepted the question as valid by trying to answer, instead of ignoring it and asking Bilbo for a proper riddle. It was an accident, Biblo didn;t do it on purpose. And Biblo gave him three tries. It was basically luck-Biblo is luckier than Matrim Cauthon is some ways, and Biblo is smart enough to take advantage of it to avoid being eaten. Let me repeat that: Gollum was planning to eat him, no matter how things turned out, i.e he wasn't being honest. Biblo was only saved because he had the ring, which means he could turn invisible and sneak behind him. It is also worth pointing out that Biblo did what Gollum would not have, and spared the other person's life. He could have killed him, and he decided not to, and thta is why he, unlike Gollum, could escape the ring. (Now, things are slightly different in the original version, before Tolkien realized the ring was in fact The Ring, but that is neither here nor there.)
