At the risk of getting shit for my different opinion I must say maybe you're confusing figurative speech with real claims of oppression. Like I remember this incident when someone in the HP fandom compared the Harry/Hermione fans to oppressed slaves in the South and made an icon with a picture of Harriet Tubman and it was all in good humor only a fan who shall not be named took it seriously and kept harassing the other person for being insensitive.

Aside from metaphors and jokes, in the small sphere of the fandom things could "feel" similar to the bigger issues in the bigger world. What that means is that while being shunned for liking an unpopular character is no where the same as real oppression it could feel that way (be the equivalent of it) in the made up, tiny universe of fandom, and perhaps that's what those people are talking about.

I vaguely remember that Harry Potter incident, too. If it's the same one I'm remembering, the person turned out to be a troll who made a "militant H/G shipper" livejournal, too, and was planning on building both journals and going to war, but came clean before that could happen.

That incident made me realize just how bad the HP fandom climatehad gotten because so many people believed the HHR journal and were reporting it all over while the same people instantly called troll on the H/G journal, which was claiming that Ginny was the property of her brothers and would be turned over to be Harry's property. It was really telling about how everyone was ready to believe the worst examples about the "other side" (and use them as excuses for being nasty to all shippers) while not believing that their shippers could be capable of outrageous theories or behavior. The fandom was just a warzone.
