Try the Deathgate Cycle by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman (has elves and dwarves and whatnot, but mixes up their roles in various untraditional ways,) or the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson (no Tolkeinian races, but some pretty bizarre and interesting new ones.)
