I pretty much agree. I love fantasy, but a lot of it seems to be the same thing all the time (and seriously annoying names! I could write an essay about why so many names in books annoy me!).

Hey um, if anyone's looking for a high-fantasy book that turns a lot of typical tropes on their head, I recommend The Iron Dragon's Daughter by Michael Swanwick, just fyi!

feel like i need to brainstorm some ideas outside this realm, cause i always have fantasy feels. but they tend more toward anime-ish fantasy instead of dungeons and dragons stuff. hm.

anyway, ia. it's fucking FANTASY....you'd think there would be more creativity.

Nah, they've moved onto GRIMDARK GRIMDARK GRIMDARK.

High fantasy plot in the vein of Tolkien, which is what you're referencing, wasn't original in the first place. It's widely agreed that Tolkien took his plot from Wagner's The Ring Cycle and shunted it to one side precisely because he gave a fuck about world-building.

You just need to find the right authors. Stop bitching.

so stop reading boring, derivative high fantasy. read some of the extensive amount of fantasy out there that isn't boring, derivative, multi-volume epic high fantasy, for pete's sake. i sympathize with you not being super-interested in world-building, but c'mon, people.

I've read evil elves (and not just drow, which are far more racist and sexist than I remember them being when I was 12. The things you pick up on as you get older.).

I have to say, though, that Sci-Fi tends to be a lot more creative in my experience.

Eh, some people out there probably subvert this more than you'd think it's just a case of finding it really. I mean isn't there that Orc book out there somewhere which makes them good or seem neutral anyway?

And I'm sure TV tropes has something about elves being wrong in some way:

[personal profile] feotakahari 2012-10-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm having a harder and harder time finding high fantasy that isn't part of, at minimum, a thick trilogy. At worst, it's part of a series of 6-10 volumes or longer (and while I've read series longer than 10 volumes that were still good by volume 10, I've never read one that, having lasted past 10, was still good by the volume the author finally decided to end it at.) No one seems to know or care when they've reached the point where there's nothing left to say.

Woah I kinda envy you, because that's fantasy with elves, castles and shit, is the kind of fantasy I'm very much into, and... can't find it outside of games (like Skyrim or Dragon Age). Everything else books, manga are mostly on the urban fantasy type (the teenage hero meets demon/fae/angel/werewolf/shinigami and abandon boring school life for fun with them). I'd really love to here some medieval fantasy with elves, and dwarf and shit that IS NOT Witcher or Forgotten Realms series.

I don't think it counts as High Fantasy exactly, but I recommend Discworld. Particularly Lords and Ladies if you are looking for evil elves.

Maybe you need to broaden your search a bit. I mean the last several fantasy novels I read didn't have elves or anything like that. The Magister trilogy by C.S Freidman didn't have elves or light vs dark, it does explore what defines humanity, and the morality in the story is really fuzzy. Although it might not be everyone's cup of tea. I also read something by Karen Miller, (The Godspeaker trilogy I think?) that was pretty good, and it started out in a non-European culture, which I liked, but it's definitely not for everyone.

That book also stomp-kicks a lot of other fantasy tropes bloody.

This entire thread made my day because I now have a whole list of Fantasy books to go check out and read.

Also, re:comments on fantasy series = Bad; I find that interesting because I want to write fantasy (working on a couple of different book concepts) but I don't want to write fantasy series (nor can my brain seem to come up with a plot that would go past two novels at the most). However, all that I've heard from other writers and even from my brief brushings with agents/publishers say that's what they want. A story that would be able to sustain at least a trilogy. Guess it's nice to hear that there are readers who don't want series but only one or two books to complete a story.

Thanks all!
