I love the Five. I can ship pretty much any combination of them. My favorite is Helen/John/James, though. Also love Helen/Nikola. And John/Nikola. I'll read any other combo, though. And I've read some really good fics that are all five of them together.

I'm always glad I can do threesomes because there are so many fandom relationships that just seem to work better as threesomes to me. And it deals, for me, with the ship wars. I know not everyone can do them, but personally I love threesomes.

I just can't wrap my head around them. I think that probably makes me small-minded, or something, but I just can't get them to work. I don't have problems with them on any moral level (not that I've met anyone in a polyamorous relationship irl, at least that I know of), my brain just doesn't process how they work.

Alas. I have a good friend who ships Nikola/John/Helen, which seems like it could be fascinating, what with their respective damages and whatnot. But when she tried to explain it to me I just blinked in confusion.

I don't think it makes you small-minded to not ship poly relationships or not understand them unless you start objecting to them in real life.

For me, while I don't think I'm poly per say, I am very intrigued by poly relationships and wouldn't be adverse to being part of one. They've always made just as much sense to me as couples have. And when done right, I find threesome fics both hotter and more interesting than couples. So it is a thing I go looking for in fics.

But I get that they don't make as much sense to other people.

You might want to do some reading and listen to some podcasts. I can recommend Dan Savage's column Savage Love, or his podcast Savage Love, and Cunning Minx's podcast Polyamory Weekly for something more specifically about polyamory. Also, the books "Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships" and "The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships & Other Adventures" are both very good.

Because yeah, those five ... yes, all of the shipping. All of it. I think it probably started with Helen sleeping with most of them and then threesomes started happening and cuckolding fetishes abounded and I really need to go back and rewatch the first two seasons and catch up on Sanctuary, don't I?

Not OP

I just marathoned the whole series after getting the S4 dvds for my birthday. It was fun. And, yeah...it pretty much revolves around Helen, which is wonderful and unique. The power she had over John and Nikola, both of whom are by no means weak men and by many accounts frightening, is just delightful. Then she's off being emotional/intellectual equals with James, which is again rather refreshing. And she does it all without becoming TOO much of a Sue (yeah, that's arguable). Helen is amazing and should be shipped with everyone! And when John is wandering off to ask Tesla to electrocute him, and there's something fascinating about John/James and James/Tesla, too.

Come to think of it, I think my ships probably follow pretty much the same as OP's rather complicated graph. I just don't have problems with poly, with the dynamic and damages of Helen/John/Tesla being one of my favorite ever, and not nearly explored enough in fic. ^^;
