But, but, but... why not just leave them in an archive where someone might find them, even if it is months from now? It's not like they are cluttering things up or anything.

I second this. I write for a pretty much dead fandom as well because hey, writing is fun, and began posting the fic because hey, maybe months or years from then someone may stumble in the fic and enjoy the read. I wrote it for my enjoyment and saw no reason not to share. Simple as that.

I happen to be always late for fandoms. As in I-can't-even-smell-the-corpse-rotting-anymore-it's-been-dead-so-long late. And if I find even just a single piece of fanwork, it makes me SO happy!

not OP, but I have a separate AO3 account that I use exclusively for churning out fic for a 20+-years-old fandom because I worry that the people who know me by my main fandom identity would find it weird that I'm so deeply obsessed with something from so long ago, especially as it's something most people my age have a good bit of disdain for now.
