No, it has more to do with the fact that people who are in it solely for the praise tend to be annoying, always begging for comments, bragging about the ones they get etc. Male or female.

Nice strawman there, conflating what I'm defending--the idea that there's nothing wrong with wanting recognition for your work, and that there's nothing wrong with seeing fanfic you've invested time and care in as work--with "being in it solely for the praise...always begging for comments, bragging about the ones they get."

I'm specifically talking about the idea, which showed up here in the very first comment, that if you want recognition at all, you're Doing It Wrong, because your motives for creativity aren't pure enough.

I'm not conflating, I'm only replying to the point about "is it because fandom is a female dominated activity".

I figure I could make a complete answer about eeeeverything, but I don't have that much time.
I agree with you on the fact that you can legitimately write for both yourself and also to be read. But the ones who are in it mostly for the recognition are enough a pain in the ass to garner themselves some criticism without dragging sexism into the equation.
