what's your favorite dated slang?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What floats your boat, FS?

My personal favorites are kicks, swell, rad, the big cheese, spiffy, swanky, the boonies, wiggin', and damn skippy.

Wait, people don't use spiffy anymore?

Well shit, there's another one.

I still use sweet, cool, hot, dude, and man and I don't even know if they're outdated or not. It's so confusing.

Me too. I don't think those are outdated but who knows? I'm apparently bad at this. I once had someone look at me funny when I called them "Baby Doll" and then ask what that meant.

It's... it's a term of endearment like honey (hun), sugar (sug), sweetheart (sweetie), buttercup, cutiepie, pumpkin. I could go on.

But it's rare for that to happen to me. I normally can say whatever and no one says anything.

...Or maybe people are just being nice and not mentioning it when I use a word like spiffy or dandy? I don't know now and it's bothering me.

Yeah, but the thing is terms of endearment like that can really rub people the wrong way, since it can come off remarkably condescending, so that could also be why they gave you a look about it.

That was not the reaction I got. I know that which is why I don't use it on people I don't know. Why do you think I've never used one here?

This was a friend. I had called her love and other things previously. It was only that she had never heard "Baby Doll" before. She, in fact, liked it and wanted me to use it. She just thought the terms I used were weird. She actually laughed at me if I recall correctly.

I'm an Argeninean, and since I grew up listening to tango, I use a lot of lunfardo (a lower-class slang from the 1900's Buenos Aires) and really old sayings and expressions no one my age knows. It's fun, some are very colourful.

That's really cool! Have other people your age picked up some of the slang you use? If so, you might even be able to bring the terms back. At least, in a small scale. That would be exciting.

Damn skippy is dated slang? Damn skippy is slang to anyone at all outside of a small group of teenagers in the 90s in northern New England? That's awesome. Now I want to know the full etymology of the term and when it was popular!

I don't know if this counts (it's something I used to hear my Grandmother do, and one of my coworkers is in her sixties and she does the same), but I call everyone Hun. EVERYONE. Is that slang or just a verbal tic? idek.

Re: what's your favorite dated slang?

It's a not really slang, or a verbal tic*. It's a trait that's usually connected the various Southern dialects within the US, though that particular one seems to be dying. Though it's one that does piss a lot of people off because it comes across as very condescending, particularly if they're older than you.

*A verbal tic is something that a person can't control and generally a noise, not a word
