Nah, I think things would have been better if Katniss had just admitted her feelings for Peeta in the first book instead of dragging things out. It was clear since the first Games that she favored Peeta over Gale so the "love triangle" just felt forced.

the 'love triangle' felt forced to me as well...i tend to go by the character's thoughts and feelings while reading, and by the simple fact that katniss herself didn't consider it a love triangle, neither did i

also, i can't understand how 'love triangle' is what people talk about when referring to this series, rather than, well, EVERYTHING else it was

I actually avoided the series for years because that's the main thing people talked about. I was really surprised (and pleased) when it turned out there was not much of a love triangle at all.

Really? In the first book, whenever she was around Peeta she was constantly thinking of Gale. His name popped up so much I almost forgot he was only in the book for a couple of chapters. And her feelings for Peeta always seemed so fake. It's only by the third book I actually took them to be remotely believable.
